i'm often incredibly self-aware of my hyper-competitive nature, and try not to let it get the better of me. but, recently i've had an interesting revelation about why I have kept it up for so long. more importantly, i realized that i've been doing it for the wrong reasons...

anyone who knows me knows that growing up i've always been told what i "can't do" by teachers, (some of) my mentors, and my peers alike. needless to say that's put a dent in my self-confidence, but i'm off that.

i often felt as though i was placed in a world that was not meant for me. as a result i've developed an "i'm going to prove to you how great i am" sense of self-assurance and attitude in my daily proceedings. i'm only starting to realize now how that's affected my relationships with others. 

whenever someone tells me i can't do something, i often try anything in my power to prove them wrong. it's almost as if i'm challenging realities sometimes, but the satisfaction i get from successfully challenging any provocation (from anyone) is more powerful than any drug i can think of. 

throughout my education i was constantly pushed by my parents and mentors to be the best student i could be because my grades would take me where i wanted to be (financially successful doing something i love). going to a school where I was ranked against my peers only fueled any desire to be the best. that carried onto my college career. by then, it had gotten to the point where grades=self-worth, i can't tell you how many times this idea has boiled over in my head during points of frustration. now that i'm in my senior year it's gotten to the point where the direction of my spirit has hit a proverbial glass ceiling.

i acted rather immaturely to seeing that a friend of mine did better than me on a exam. something akin to an "adult temper tantrum". it wasn't until then that he realized that i was so competitive with those around me (even the ones i care about). it made me come to the realization that i'd been doing it wrong this entire time.

Another close friend (and current housemate) told me a couple of days ago that "our friendship had greatly improved now that we were no longer in classes together." my internal monologue then figured it out, i have to be the best version of me for ME. i must push myself to be the best me, and i'm in competition with no one, but myself. i suppose this is the first step towards self improvement, because no matter how bad you mess up, you can always choose to be better IF YOU WANT TO...

I guess that's one of the beauties of the mysterious journey of life.
