Three Types of Questions
Reading Comprehension
This type tests your ability to read and understand complex prose. This includes understanding meanings of words, sentences, and paragraphs, discerning major points, summarizing, reaching conclusions, reasoning, understanding structure, identifying author’s perspective and assumptions and strengths, and considering alternative explanations. Each question is based on a passage, ranging from one to several paragraphs. There are roughly ten passages of mostly one paragraph. Half of the questions in the section will be based on passages, where there are one to six questions per passage. The three kinds of questions are single multiple-choice answer, one or more multiple choice answer, and select in passage. For the one or more, one to three of the choices are correct and there is no partial credit. For the select in passage, you select a sentence in the passage that meets the question requirements.
Text Completion
This type tests your ability of interpretation and evaluation by presenting passages without crucial words and requiring you to select words to create a meaningful whole. The passage can range from one to five sentences with one to three blanks and three answer choices per blank (five for a single blank). All choices must be correct as there’s no partial credit.
Sentence Equivalence
This type also tests your ability to complete a passage with only partial information. These questions consist of one sentence with one blank and two-word choices that complete the sentence properly. There’s no partial credit for answers.

Reading Comprehension
1. Be aware of distractor choices like contradictions, distorted facts/ideas, irrelevant ideas, and confusing diction.
2. Focus on the passage and avoid bringing in outside knowledge.
3. Don’t pick almost or mostly correct answers.
4. Be cautious of “All EXCEPT” or similar forms of question.
5. Make sure you answer about the main idea when asked and not subsidiary ideas.
6. Only focus on what the author has expressed or implied, don’t use your own interpretations.
7. Read and analyze the passage carefully discerning main ideas, transitions, and relationships within the passage.
8. Read each question carefully and do not rely on outside knowledge when answering.
9. Read all the answer choices.
10. Pay attention to context concerning word meaning.
11. For one or more, evaluate each choice separately, make sure it completely answers the question, and don’t be alarmed if all options are correct.
12. For selecting a sentence, evaluate each relevant passage and don’t select something that only partially applies.
Text Completion
1. Read through the passage.
2. Identify significant words or phrases, especially those supporting a central idea.
3. Try to fill the blank yourself before looking at the choices, predict the word.
4. If you can’t predict a word, discern the connotation it should have.
5. Skip around with blanks to make others easier.
6. Double check the words logically and grammatically fit.
7. Use root word knowledge for educated guesses.
8. Look for straight forward words like and, in addition, also, thus, therefore, etc.
9. Look for detouring words like but, however, rather, nonetheless, in contrast, etc.
Sentence Equivalence
1. Read the sentence.
2. Identify significant words and phrases.
3. Try to fill the blanks, but don’t get hung up on one word with no equivalent.
4. Double check each answer in the context of the sentence, make sure the meaning of the sentence fits.
