Got this table the other night that ended up splitting their check. Two couples. One guy says, "we're good tippers so don't worry. We'll take care of you. We own a restaurant so we know that usually that means 10% but we really mean it." Meanwhile the other constantly raves about my service with statements like "This is the best service I've ever had," and "Your service has been perfect." Perfect he says. Perfect... They both lulled me to sleep. Good tipper gave me 21%. Average at best. Mr. Perfect gives me 17%. Leaves me wondering what I would have gotten if I sucked since the best service of his life was only worth 17%.

The Verbal Tip

I'll never understand why this happens, but every waiter out there has been in this situation.

You have a table and everything's going fine, no problems. You're happy with your table & your table seems happy with you. Then at some point they do the unmaginable...they praise you. They tell you what a great waiter you are, the best waiter they've ever had, you're so nice and wonderful and blah blah blah!

Now, if you're not a waiter you probably think I'm crazy right now. I bitch when my tables are mean to me and when they're nice... it makes no sense. But I have no problem with my table being nice, it's when they are overly nice.

See if a table is a nice person but a really bad tipper, they think that they can make up for my lack of tip by being a well-behaved customer and telling my manager & I how wonderful I am. I would say about 95% of the time, if my table praises me, they leave me a really shitty tip.

Note to all the verbal tippers out there: you're praise does not pay my tip, so just keep your mouth shut & tip me 18-20%. Thanks.
