The Akeilons and the Veretians hate each other And have for generations. They know a little bit about each other’s culture, but not much. Yet Damen shows up in Vere speaking nearly perfect Veretian. Because his father ensured it. One doesn’t learn to do that except by speaking it regularly and constantly through one’s life, preferably starting early, with native speakers.

Where exactly did they get native speakers to teach the prince of Akielos how to speak it *And* how to understand it when it is spoken to him (they are not the same skill necessarily)? Did the king capture an entire Veretian village and keep them as prisoners on the castle grounds somewhere so the prince could speak with them daily?

'As for the room, everywhere he looked his eyes were assaulted with ornamentation. The walls were overrun by decoration. The wooden doors were delicate as a screen and carved with a repeated design that included gaps in the wood; through them you could glimpse shadowy impressions of what lay on the other side. The windows were similarly screened. Even the floor tiles were particoloured and arranged in a geometric pattern. Everything gave the impression of patterns within patterns, the twisty creations of the Veretian mind.'

Imagine Damen and Laurent being handcuffed together for some reason. Laurent being the salty bitch he usually is and Damen taking advantage of the moment to court him with cheesy pickup lines

So even though my head knows that Nicaise’s earring that Laurent wears is probably like a clip on or something, my heart keeps telling me Laurent-with-a-pierced-ear, so here are some hcs about how that happened

-he actually lost a bet to Nicaise and because Laurent is a fair loser and has a soft spot for this poor boy who’s too smart for his own good, he goes through with it

-the Regent made him extraordinarily angry sometime around when he was 15 and he got drunk and acted impulsively and got it pierced just to piss him off

-he needed to wear an earring for a super secret disguise and didn’t realize that clip on earrings were a thing until after he made Jord pierce his ear for him

and one sad one cause what’s a hc without some crying am I right

- the regent makes him get one of his ears pierced in the year after Marlas when Laurent was most under his thumb to make him feel even weaker than he already did...it’s an easily concealable piercing, especially since he wouldn’t actually wear anything in it unless he was alone with his Uncle and even if someone did see it, the Regent could simply blame it on the whims of a willful, careless prince
