IPad mini (Verizon LTE) what's transformed
IPad mini (Verizon LTE) what's transformed Well, what's this, another little tablet from Apple? We surprised ourselves when you are quite keen on the very first iPad mini, which entered our desks only a couple of days ago....
Verizon LTE is FAST!!!
Spending a few days up north with the family, and unfortunately they don't get cable, fios, or even DSL up here. Fortunately they do get Verizon's LTE Coverage. I've already scheduled to have Verizon come and install Verizon Home Fusion for them with a 20GB CAP.
While I wait, I've had to create a wifi hotspot off my Samsung Galaxy S3.
I was curious to see the speeds I get. And the results are astounding!
I wanted to play a game, so I went ahead on Steam and started to download Amnesia (50%, off today fyi). Look at those download speeds!!!
Back home with my FIOS connection I get 35/35. So to see fairly comparable connection here, all from my LTE radio on my phone is just great!
One thing to note. I had to up my data cap to 10GB for my phone this month, which cost 80$ vs the 50$ i was paying for 5GB before.
Overall, I'm very excited to see what Verizon's Home Fusion will bring when it arrives!
Part two of my iPhone 5 assessment for CNNMoney's tech section covers this gadget's performance on Verizon's LTE service and various WiFi networks, its A6 processor and the upgraded camera. I'd like to know if I'm too hard on the last aspect; do you find this takes significantly better photos than other new high-end smartphones?
Update: Verizon's iPhone 5 won't support simultaneous voice & data ...yet
I'd like to give an update to yesterday's [post on which network to choose](http://mgalligan.com/post/31415410863/buying-an-iphone-5-dont-go-with-at-t) when buying an iPhone 5. One of the things that I mentioned was how Verizon's network will now support simultaneous voice & data. Turns out that's not 100% true. An Apple spokeswoman named Natalie Kerris said the following [according to the New York Times](http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/13/iphone-5-calls-data/): > "iPhone 5 supports simultaneous voice and data on GSM-based 3G and LTE networks. It is not yet possible to do simultaneous voice and data on networks that use CDMA for voice and LTE for data in a single radio design." Other Verizon 4G LTE devices are able to deal with this by adding a second antenna – one to handle the voice, and one to handle the data. Except it's a bit more complicated with the iPhone 5 in that they too use two antennas, but they do so to simply improve the signal quality. Those two antennas use the same technology at the same time meaning it can't split between LTE and CDMA bands. The Verge was a quick to report that the [iPhone 5 won't support simultaneous voice and data on Verizon or Sprint](http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/13/3328492/iphone-5-simultaneous-voice-data-verizon-sprint) based on the following quote from a Verizon spokesperson: > "The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network, while letting customers access the Internet over the WiFi." But it's still not clear whether or not the iPhone 5 is compatible with a possible future implementation of voice calls. ### The Voice Over LTE elephant in the room One possibility is that the iPhone 5 will support Voice Over LTE in the future. Right now it doesn't seem to be a capability but considering that the radio is the same, it's possible that it could be implemented via a software update (this statement is based on my current knowledge of cellular radios). Verizon began testing VoLTE capabilities late last year and are [reported](http://www.theverge.com/2012/1/20/2720083/verizon-allegedly-live-with-two-trial-voice-over-lte-markets-national) to be pushing the technology in 2013. When VoLTE becomes a capability of the Verizon network, theoretically the iPhone 5 will have the ability to support simultaneous voice & data while connected to an LTE network. However, Apple hasn't made any statement about the above yet. I, for one, am hopeful. I have a strong hatred for all that AT&T has done lately and am very keen on going to a different network. However, it appears that the decision may be a bit tougher, at least in the short-term.
One user told WSJ that he reached his monthly cap with Verizon after just two hours of watching college basketball on his new tablet. Think about that for a minute: $30 for two hours of video. At that point, he should have just bought himself a ticket to the actual game.

Data caps be the new censorship people.
A well written post on TechCrunch about how and why VZW's LTE outages could get worse in the near future. Kind of reminds me of what Steve Jobs said AT&T Wireless told him about wireless service, "it will get worse before it gets better".
If you haven't noticed, VZW no longer airs their "can you hear me now" ads and no longer uses their "Most Dependable 4G Network" slogan.
