A/N: So I’ve finally begun this thing, the Hetalia and Plague Inc. crossover. Wish me luck. It goes without saying, but the content matter of this fic will get pretty disturbing, and will likely include commonly-triggering elements such as body horror, murder, suicide, and more. This prologue isn’t like that, but. Just so you know for future reference.
We’re alive. I don’t know how we managed, but we’re alive.
It’s crowded. Makeshift homes of rusty cars, rickety boats, branches and cardboard, and ratty old tents dot the landscape, and in them foreigners - mostly Canadians, Nordics, and Russians - doing whatever they can to survive here. Petty crime is rampant. Gangs are everywhere. Our resources are running scarce. My boss has made it clear that they will be sent back home once their home countries have been deemed safe enough to inhabit again. But that won’t be for another several years yet.
Though I can somewhat keep a hold on native Greenlanders, I can’t do much about the others. Sweden, Finland, and Faroe come here every now and then to make sure I’m okay and to try and get their own people in my country to settle down. Canada and Norway stay in their own countries because they were relatively lucky, with millions of their people still alive. They need to be with them.
Russia is infected, so he’s locked up in total isolation until the cure comes to him. His boss and government say he’s doing surprisingly well, all things considered. We all smile and nod, but no one trusts them, given what’s been reported of other Nations, like Denmark.
...I don’t want to say anything about Denmark right now. Thinking about him makes my stomach churn.
...
I wonder how Madagascar is doing. I wonder if he’s going through the same hardships as I am. Our bosses shut us down completely as soon as they could. Some other island countries were also shut down early on for protection - Seychelles, Philippines, Cuba, New Zealand, Iceland...
His country is crowded, too. Lots of people must have thought that being on an isolated island would protect them from the disease. I suppose they weren’t wrong, but they’ve caused so many problems. Especially with almost no international trade left, Iceland doesn’t have the resources to support everyone, either.
It’s been harder on him than it has on me, to be honest. He’s been especially snappy and irritable lately, especially after the situation with Denmark came to light. Not sarcastic and stoic like he used to be. Had any of the other Nordics been infected as well - lord, if Norway had been infected - he would have lost it for sure.
Though it’s not like the others haven’t changed. Finland is always on edge. Sweden is anxious and talks quite a lot more now. Norway doesn’t act as bitter anymore, probably so he doesn’t worsen Iceland’s feelings. And Faroe’s told me that I haven’t smiled even once in the last decade; now I’m self-conscious about it.
I want my family back. I want my normal, quirky, bickering family back. I miss the annoyances, I miss the petty squabbles. I miss when Iceland was always talking back to us and when Norway and Finland were morning demons and when Denmark was, well, Denmark.
But I can’t lose sight of what’s important. That we’re still alive. And that the cure is definitely coming. That there is hope. And that no matter what else may happen, we still have each other. We Nordics will live on.
As best friends. As a dedicated team. As a family.
Captain Grif wasn't a particularly well-known pirate; hell, in all his life his crew had only stolen a handful of things, but though they weren't rich they lived a nice and lazy life at sea.
There was one treasure he was intent on taking though.
"You're such a fucking nerd," Dexter Grif whispers into the other boy's ear, holding him close with both hands on his partner's hips.
"Then why the fuck did you invite me to the dance?" Richard Simmons whispers back, hands on Grif's shoulders, bodies only inches from touching, their faces nearly nose to nose.
