9/11 is great because they tried to turn like one instance of blowback from US Imperialism into an excuse for Forever War, only for the hyperbolic and over-saturated presentation of this "greatest tragedy of all time" to quickly lose any emotional effect on the generations too young to have understood or even witnessed it at the time. So now it's just a fucking joke to everyone like under the age of 25 (including non USamericans who learned of it through osmosis from the global hegemonic culture) and if anything has served as a jumping off point for people to learn about US imperialism (both as the cause of attacks and as actions 9/11 was used to justify) and come to oppose it. So even among like Liberals, "9/11 is funny" is just the consensus opinion and "9/11 was completely justified" isn't even that controversial. In conclusion; a merry 9/11 to all and to all a good night
opened up Tumblr for the first time in months just to celebrate the holiday and y'all are not disappointing
whenever there is talk about forgiving and letting sexual abusers into ur community and giving them a chance I become flabbergasted until I remember that not everyone lived with a pedophile for 20+ years of their life :/
word of advice from someone who has lived this:we don't live in a society where there are proper consequences for any abuse,we don't live in a society that values or cares about abuse victims and we definitely don't live in a society where there is incentive for abusers to become better people.so do what you want but know by doing this you and ur loved ones are in active danger the entire time
this post is not gonna be well put together but i am having feelings
mean girls is trending right now because the musical movie just came out and i feel insane. idk why i do, it was stupid of me to think that most people Got It, no one ever gets it, it was always about the memes and the aesthetic.
the first mean girls movie was based on a nonfiction book called queen bees and wannabes. it interviewed and discussed the social caste system in teen girl friendships. how they hold each other to these insane standards of heternormative femininity out of sheer terror that they won't meet those standards themselves. the way they leverage their relationships for some small degree of power in a world designed to strip them of it, even if it drags other girls down.
the "you can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week and on wednesdays we wear pink" speech was not an original creation for the script. it's a QUOTE from a real teenage girl. those were REAL RULES.
then the musical came, and it was one step removed from the intended messaging of the film. OG mean girls was not perfect (and was extremely racist), but it said what needed said. the musical leaned on the comedy more, but still left a heartfelt undertone, and still critiqued the systems in place. of course no piece of media is going to be perfect, but it was about the conversation.
then this new movie comes out and it is washed over in the veneer of white hollywood feminism so thick you can't see anymore. the problematic aspects of the original movie are taken out to avoid "offending" when the offense was the point. it becomes toothless, it becomes some other thing entirely. they changed karen's line "i expect to run the world in shoes i cannot walk in" to "watch me as i run the world in shoes i cannot walk in." because choice feminism is in vogue, suddenly this character whose entire point is that she doesn't think deeply about WHY she does anything is suddenly hip to the fact that the world is against her.
i think of sokka losing his misogyny arc in the new atla. i think of the Heathers remake casting the bitchy, identical heathers as queer and hollywood-fat outcasts. as if the story, the meaning, the allegory is hidden in the sets and the jokes and the music. it's a whole new thing now, and it's a thing that means nothing in particular.
the plastics should not wear jeans. they should not have curves. their queerness should be suppressed, painful. their sexuality is not a slay, it's the only thing they think they have of value. the santa dance isn't sexy, it's shocking, it's mortifying - they are children.
they're not mean because "we are all mean." they are mean because they are girls in a world that brutalizes them and crushes them into a standardized shape. they are mean because the world is mean to them. they are mean because it gives them some power back. they are mean because it's the only weapon they have.
the landscape of femininity today has shifted to camera-ready makeup at the age of 10, stringent performative hygiene standards, and avoiding being caught on film while having a genuine emotion. the consumerism, the fatphobia, the racism, the classism, the homophobia remain. We could have had a conversation about that.
all these gay girls are like "wow i want a big lady to step on me" but where is the love for short girls stepping on you? short girl intimidating you with her presence and body language alone until you fall over and she steps on you?? short girl taking down a girl who's much taller than her and making her submit??? where's the love for my shadow of the colossus bitches???
WHERE'S THE LOVE FOR GIRLS LIKE THIS
op this is a very hot concept and your post is valid but did you HAVE to explain this with a gif from penguins of madagascar
so genuinely frustrating that masashi kishimoto has written what could have been one of *THE* greatest, most emotionally complex and captivating queer romances in shonen if he wasn't shackled by heteronormativity and also a coward
I’m going to disagree with a little thing. I don’t think it’s easy to be pro-Palestine and against antisemitism, because we are all enmeshed in cultures that have Islamophobia, anti Arab racism, imperialism, AND antisemitism at their core. It’s a constant learning process and because anti-arab racism and antisemitism are embedded into these cultural contexts infinitely older than the modern state of Israel, we cannot automatically assume that any stances we hold on these issues are automatically “moral” or “pure.” I think I’m on a journey of unlearning that will go on for a long, long time. It doesn’t “cost zero dollars not to be antisemitic” because antisemitism is an extremely delicious, useful conspiracy to explain just how the world works and is central to the operational logics of conspiratorial thinking about how the world works. It will cost you a lot of dollars, just like it will cost you a lot of dollars to stand up for any other oppressed group. I don’t assume myself to be morally pure either- I have so many of my own biases, including racism, Islamophobia, and a continued fight with internalized antisemitism, and we Won’t get anywhere until we can face these issues head on and interrogate the nuances. I’m so burned out on people claiming fighting any of this is easy. It’s not. Do it anyway.
Anti-arab racism and antisemitism are literally at the heart of the Christian European (and imho euro American) construction of the moral European self by being the immoral others, the unsaved, the heathen, the unclean and this kind of thinking isn’t isolated only to conservatives, it’s absolutely present on the modern “liberal” and “leftist” platforms
one of the most irritating things right now is the zero-sum game this is being treated as. As many many Palestinian and Jewish leftists have pointed out, the liberation of Palestine and fighting antisemitism are two necessary and profoundly interlinked causes - it really is all of us together or none of us at all. I keep seeing people declare being against Hamas or mourning those killed by Hamas as being an inherently “pro Israel” stance when it really isn’t inherently so, or having a "pro palestine stance" due to calling out war crimes by the state of israel, and those aren't actually mutually exclusive opinions to hold.
I’m also seeing people use true fact that there are pro Palestinian Jews to deflect from their antisemitism. yes there are pro palestine jews! i'm one of them. the fact that there are many jews who support palestine does not cancel out the fact that antisemitism exists, or even that many people bring antisemitic ideologies that are hundreds of years older than the state of israel to the table when they discuss i/p. dual loyalties, blood libel, the inherent sketchiness of Jews, ideas of jews globally *controlling* everything bad through a *secret elite,* the idea that antisemitism itself is a constructed lie jews have come up with to justify the state of israel.... all of this stuff is so, so much older than the state of israel and furthermore, jews aren't going to be safe in the diaspora or in a liberated palestine until it's all faced head-on. but i constantly, constantly see people who are asked to unpack these ideologies or face antisemitism at all deflecting by saying that "there are pro palestine jews." Jews can support Palestine and be worried about the level of visceral hatred that's rising against us! In the same way that i don't want the state of israel or conservative jewish institutions to "speak in my name" to justify the dispossession of palestinians or attacks on civilians in gaza, i don't want goysiche leftists to "speak in my name" to justify that because jews support palestine, other people who support palestine are inherently free of antisemitic bias. take my name out of your mouth. in terms of zionism/antizionism i'm only interested in supporting palestine, not in being a "good jew" for antisemitic goyim to justify why it's alright to hate all the others or literally call for their deaths.
i'm also going to say - the lack of a zero sum game goes in a lot of ways.- support for the state israel doesn't mean being free of antisemitic bias and the support by national leaders for the state of israel doesn't mean antisemitism has been "dealt with" at all. and being pro-palestine politically doesn't free one from islamaphobic or anti-arab bias. i'm also really suspicious of people who are only comfortable with jews if they define themselves in what goyim tend to see as europe-based, "diasporist" terms and negate all connections to the levant. i don't think this is just Bad on an antisemitism axis but bad for the goyishe response to all middle eastern people.
everyone for everyone. all of us together or none of us at all.
Babe, ever since I met you, your power level has been over 9000. With you, I know the cake won't be a lie. Together we can rule the galaxy, and all their base will belong to us. I can haz marriage?
OP I am going to break into your house and unleash a horde of locusts in your closet if you don’t stop
wouldn't even notice with the type of shit i got goin on
idk man i just think "it's okay to kill civilians in retaliation for crimes committed by their government" isn't a good look for anyone. one might even go so far as to say it's "not very woke"
