“You almost killed me, so no, it’s not nice to meet you.”

“In my defense, you shouldn’t sneak up on anyone,” Kalani sneered, though her amber eyes were apologetic. She wasn’t good at really saying those out loud. 

She furrowed her eyebrows, face testing into something of a struggle, she was trying, truly. The tall man before her didn’t seem horrible, though she certainly didn’t trust him. If anything, she put her blaster back in its holder, feeling it make sure the safety was on again. “Look... I really do mean it, okay? I don’t normally pull my baby out on everyone around me.”

“I promise you, this isn’t what it looks like.”

Kalani opened her mouth as if she were about to say something, only to gasp softly and forget the words she had been thinking. She pressed her lips together, almost saying something again before ultimately giving up. Sure, she said it wasn’t what it looked like -- did Kalani believe it? Maybe a little. It didn’t stop her from feeling pissed about finding the pilot digging around in a bag that didn’t belong to her. 

“Uhh- huh. So you’re not trying to find something to use against me, huh? Because I promise you that the only thing you will be finding in that bag is some plasma for my blaster and a bunch of useless trinkets I’ve picked up. That satisfy you?” She really couldn’t stop herself from scoffing, the sound escaping her throat before she even processed the thought. Sure, she came off a little mean, but it was her shit. 

And Kalani had learned to become protective of what little she had the hard way.

“Can’t sleep?”

can’t sleep meme. [[accepting.]]

“It’s a bit hard to sleep when you feel something terrible is about to happen,” came the whispered response, her eyes cast to the ground. Deep down, she knew it was something in the Force, something shifting, but she wouldn’t allow herself to admit that she could feel it. 

“I’m just a hired gun, and yet I feel that my role may be forced to become something bigger than that. Who knows. Maybe I’m just a bit delusional from sleep deprivation.”

“Curiosity, mainly.” She turned on her heel, head cocked to the side. He looked pensive; it made her lips quirk up into somewhat of a smirk. “Relax,” she began, the roll of her eyes evident in the way her accent dipped.

“I’m not going to hurt you if you don’t hurt me.” If anything, she wondered to herself why she had let him follow her, but it didn’t exactly bother her. Kalani got followed a lot, but for some reason, this one piqued her interest. Maybe it was just the energy she was getting from him, but it didn’t seem like the near stalking was for anything that ended in a fight. Yet. 

“If you would kindly answer my question?”

“I had to tie you up. You didn’t leave me any other choice.”

“Sure I did. Do I really look like I’d be able to hurt you? Come on -- you even took my blaster!” Amber jewels are narrowed into a half-glare, though she’s more concerned about the discomfort around her wrists. The stiffness settling into her shoulders wasn’t so nice, either. In and out, her employer had said. She snorted silently to herself, rolling her eyes up at her captor. “You just had to walk on by and everything could have been just dandy, Laserbrain.”

“Can’t sleep?”

“No, I’m sleepwalking. Having a totally amazing dream,” the woman replied with sarcasm dripping off each syllable, her eyes puffy and adorning terrible looking bags beneath. At that point, Kalani wasn’t sure as to how many hours she had been awake. Each time she tried, flashes invaded her mind, followed by screams she really didn’t want to relive. “What are you doing out here? Your mind keeping you awake too?”

“Hey. Pretend you were waiting for me. You’re being followed.”

Of all things expected on such a dim day, it wasn’t a girl telling her that she was being followed—Kalani had felt it minutes earlier. She wasn’t sure what to make of it, nor the voice in front of her. There weren’t any particularly ominous vibes coming from this, something almost… alluring, Kalani would say. It didn’t seem like she would be killed, at the very least.

Tentatively, she came to a stop, putting on a wide smile for this stranger. She couldn’t tell who the girl looked like; she spilled the first name that came to mind anyway. “Tyla, there you are!” She cringed at the way her voice sounded too relieved.
