Who else thinks of “That Thing You Do!” when they see this verse? 😂 In all seriousness, though, it’s interesting to compare translations of this verse. . The ESV says, “By your endurance you will gain your lives.” NIV puts it, “Stand firm, and you will win life.” I’m kinda partial to the KJV in the image, but that’s probably due to the movie scene. Deuteronomy is super clear as to why we should follow God's commands and love him. A, because he's God, so there's that pertinent detail! And B, over and over it's repeated in Deut. 6 to do these things "that it may go well with you." Verse 24 adds a really cool component: "for your good always" (and so God would preserve us). . How often do you follow God's commands for your own/best good? I know I don't have the best intentions a lot of the time; even as a kid I would obey my parents, for example, only grudgingly when it wasn't something I was "wildly enthusiastic about". (I took Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes' advice to heart: "I don't think you should have to do something you're not enthusiastic about." 😂) Comparatively, going to the gym is not always super fun. But I do it because it's good for me and has long-term positive effects. Following God for my good is always going to have positive effects. That, I can bank on. . We're all going to have times we're not enthusiastic about following God. We can't live on the mountaintop all the time. That's just reality. But when we're in the valleys, or even the plateaus, we still gotta follow God and remember it's for our best good.
