One person can change the world. 🌏| Repost @meiyangchang | This is going to be a LONG post, so bear with me. The word "Impossible" doesn't exist in Afroz Shah 's dictionary! Many months ago, I read about this man who was relentlessly cleaning up #Versova beach in #Mumbai. When I joined him & his merry band of volunteers one weekend, I was appalled by the tonnes of garbage & plastic waste that they intended to clear off the beach. Though I didn't doubt his noble intentions, I was mighty sceptical, to be honest. Those who follow me regularly would remember a post on this same man & beach, months ago. 85 weeks later, Afroz has not only realised his dream of a clean beach, he's also brought more volunteers, municipality folk, marine board officials and people from various walks & positions of life to lend a hand on a regular basis. And he shows no sign of slowing down! The beach may be clean now but it is our job now to maintain it, he says. (Oh, and did I mention he's also propagating construction of toilets to prevent open defecation, amongst other things?) He intends to soon extend this program to other beaches in Mumbai as well. You'd think that these are no brainers that the government should've done on their own, but when the system fails you, you don't complain. You just get on with doing it yourself, until the system also starts respecting you & chips in. Out of the 85 weeks, I was part of it only for 4 before injury & work kept me out for a long time. People may have come & gone but his movement never lost steam. And as long as we have committed, passionate & concerned individuals like Afroz, it never will. The miracle continues every weekend.
