Like the bold, curious, self-starters they are, a group of P6 and P7 pupils approached my friend and colleague here and asked if he and Teacher Ayikoru would start meeting with them. When we entered the classes to ask what they wanted us to talk about they didn't miss a beat in explaining they wanted to learn about their bodies. To be honest, I was still tryna figure out how to manage my busy schedule already but Richard and I were so inspired by their desire to learn more that we quickly had our first meeting to draft up a club curriculum. About a month ago we had our first club meeting and since then we've created community agreements, discussed "safe space," practiced saying various parts of our bodies comfortably (head, shoulders, breast, vagina... eyes, ears, nose, and penis), talked about self-esteem and made our own personal "I am _____" statements (and shouted them), and BEST OF ALL, they voted on our club name in a free and fair election. What'd they choose? DISCOVERY CLUB! How awesome is that for a club about new topics like sex, gender, our bodies, and the changes we go through. Channeling the inspirational energy of the YTT SFS team (lookin at you @tahrimatravels, emery, @adelaxtine, jamila, & every one), we discussed sex vs. gender, gender norms in Uganda, and actions we can take to overcome the expectations society has laid out for us. These young men and women asked the best questions, had an excellent, passionate debate halfway through, and started the dialogue about how we can bring these discussions back home with us. Richard killed it (as you see here) and I continue to be amazed by his patience, humour, and top-notch engagement strategies in the classroom. After a morning of feeling somehow sick and a little funky, is moments like this that remind me why I am here. 🌻✌🏽🌍 #peacecorps #gendertalk #howiseepc #vscocam #uganda #letstalkaboutsex #versusgender #girlpower #discoveryclub
