a minor headcanon that I will die defending is that reigen initially assumed that mob’s supposed “psychic powers” were just how he rationalized his autism to himself. like here’s an obviously autistic kid, one reigen clocks immediately because he’s, well, reigen, and he’s talking about extra sensory perception and having powers he can’t control, powers that are scary. obviously, he assumes, this is something the kid picked up from his parents, a way for him to rationalize his alienation from other children— that no, you’re not “different”, you’re special (not even going into the parents who think their autistic children are like, aliens) and the other kids can see that you’re special and so they treat you like you’re weird and creepy and they don’t invite you to play and they whisper behind your back but it’s fine, because one day they’ll see how special you really are. and adult autistic reigen arataka, who was also probably-definitely bullied as a child, decides to nip that thought in the bud and gives the whole spiel, that no, “psychic powers” (autism) don’t make you special, and yes, they do make you different, and that’s fine because everyone’s different, and at the end of the day you have agency and you get to decide the kind of person you’ll be, so choose to be a kind one, and he sees this kid hanging off his every word as he tells him the kind of stuff he wishes someone had told him when he was so little and alone, and he mentally pats himself on the back and hypes himself up for another cigarette.
and then the kid makes a teacup float in front of him and he’s like oh. damn. can you kill ghosts
Can we talk about how fucking insane Nona the Ninth must've been from Gideon's perspective?
Like, she spent all of the previous book trapped in a walled off portion of Harrow's subconscious and thinking that Harrow hated her bc she refused to properly eat her soul. Then in the last like thirty minutes of the book harrow's soul goes on holiday and Gideon's now in her body fighting fucked up bug things and she still thinks Harrow hates her but also she's going to do her best to keep Harrow's body safe but definitely not because she cares about Harrow, just because she's her cavalier and that's what she's meant to do.
Then offscreen she got resurrected by god—kinda sorta we'll find out I guess, pyrrah seems to know what's up but is not sharing with the class—who she learned five minutes ago is her dad and was going around doing her tower prince thing with ianthe tridentarius who I'm sure she had a very normal and not at all weird relationship with. Idk maybe they bonded over wanting to fuck Harrow (not that Gideon would ever admit that of course).
Then while Gideon's being all corpse-y in her off time, who does she see but Harrowhark fucking Nonagesimus. Who immediately kisses her. Gideon then learns that said body that she definitely has only very platonic feelings about, antagonistic feelings even, is being piloted by an autistic six month old. Whose one really good skill is reading people and who kissed her because the second Nona walked into the room she read her like a fucking book and saw that Gideon really wanted to kiss Harrow('s body).
Gideon proceeds to be very normal about desperately needing to know where Harrow actually is. Not because she's in love with Harrow obviously, that would be crazy, she needs to know so that she can, uh, point and laugh at whatever predicament Harrow's in, yeah that's it. Only to learn that Nona doesn't fucking know.
Then, at the end of the book, Gideon learns that Nona is actually the corpse that Harrow's had a crush on since she was a kid. And also said corpse wakes up and kisses/bites Harrow right in front of her.
the whiplash going in from zootopia 1 to 2 is so crazy. like one day you’re an aloof sarcastic fox who doesn’t care about nothing or no one then BOOM. bunny best friend partner against crime who you’re obsessed with enters your life and now you cannot take your eyes off her, must lean into her when sitting in any chair no matter how bad it is for your posture, and god forbid you don’t touch her every five seconds it’s a fate worst than death!!!! speaking of death turns out you’d die for her without a moment’s thought, it’s HER death that you fear, HER safety that you stubbornly refuse to compromise, HER danger you can’t bear to see her in. turn the other cheek no matter what they all say about you, because you grew up biting your tongue and steeling your heart, but all those life lessons go out the window the second her name is sullied in the slightest. push, shove, kick, jump—summon inordinate amounts of strength when she needs saving—but be soft around her. lace your gaze, voice, and expression with care when checking in on her well-being. cherish everything she touches, treasure any gift she gives. frame that article of you two, let your apartment fall into squalor but god forbid the area displaying the carrot pen she gifted you endure even the slightest speck of dust. never leave the house without it either. that tie she gave you? always wear it. smirk when it flies in the wind, and you catch a glimpse of those poisonous night howlers that blossomed your life together. beg her to run away with you. follow her anyway when she refuses. next to her is the place you actually want to be anyway, piña koalas be damned. you’ve never felt like you belonged anywhere else. the space beside her, tucked in close and snug, is the only one that makes sense. fight and tussle for it but don’t tell her she’s your entire world and nothing will matter anymore if she isn’t there to fight the good fight with you. get separated from her because you didn’t know how to put that big big heart with her name on it into small little words. almost lose her because of it. claw your way back to her anyway. break out of a literal prison to get back to her, because it’s where you need to be. it’s where you have to be. dive towards an almost certain death to plunge anti-venom into her chest. realize she would die for you too. tell her how you feel. somewhat disguise the extent of it. hug her so tight you don’t really want to let go. adore her so deeply it makes all your friends somewhat uncomfortable and appalled at how oblivious you two are to the nature of it. save the world with her, painstakingly track down the shattered pen that scribbled the start of your connection, your now unbreakable bond. come full circle by giving her your orange pieced-back-together heart. let yourself slip words of confession you secretly want to say every day, because you don’t go a second without feeling them. without loving her.
