After Reichman murders the Commandant and is imprisoned, Veulcor abandons him, his work with him done.

Abel, now with too much time to think, and without the whispers of that chaotic creature, begins to see clearly what he has done, 

what has been done to him

and what he has done to himself

he kills himself in his cell.

We later find him down there in purgatory, and all he can do is try to tell his tale.

“Vicarious Atonement” - The Mars Volta, Amputechture

Trayl addressing Veulcor and discussing Kade and the Crew.

“Don’t you pretend” “That I’m not alive”

This could be applied to anyone post death sorta like “no one even bothered to check if I was alive or not”, but I think it fits better with him speaking to Veulcor as Veulcor basically ignores him as a person and sees him as a tool.

“My bones never ache Unless she’s nearby” 

Referring to Kade.

“Where is your face In a safe of dead tongues I can see your reflection In your totem firstborn”

Addressing Veulcor who hides amongst the dead and old grudges. He sees Veulcor’s reflection in him, an untrustworthy rotten shell of a creature.

“I suspect You’ve been carrying a pack of wolves I regret Not killing you while I had the chance (I know I had the chance I know I had)”

Double meaning, referring to both Veulcor and his deck, as well as Kade and the fact that he should have killed her, removed her, stayed away from her before anything happened (feelings, betrayal, etc).

“Maybe I will always haunt you Mark the somnolence with truth”

This is addressing the crew. Maybe the good memories they made together will remain, and if they grieve him then he truly left a mark.

“Better hang your dead palace Than have a living home to lose In the river Ganges God damns my name”

Better to wander alone amongst Purgatory than “have a living home to lose” (referring to the Annabelle and co). His name is forever damned for what he did.

“Don’t let these hands Sharpen your eyes (A rasp of tails)”

“Don’t let my actions show you who I am. I am a rat.”
