The International Volunteer Day will be celebrated on the 5th of December. The tagline for IVD-2019 Campaign is “Volunteer for an Inclusive Future”. Considering participation of youth and volunteers as critical for averting the threats and challenges to sustainable development, including the impacts of climate change, unemployment, poverty, gender inequality, conflict, and migration. The 2019 Campaign in India seeks to engage school and college students to raise awareness about the SDGs and promoting inclusion, diversity, non- discrimination and reduce inequalities in society. On IVD 2019, UN Volunteers and WWF-India have taken an initiative to inform, inspire and empower youth (17-26 years of age) about Sustainable Development Goals 2030 through youth4sustainability quiz. What is Social exclusion? Social exclusion is a process whereby certain individuals are pushed to the edge of society and prevented from participating fully by virtue of their poverty or lack of basic competencies and lifelong learning opportunities or as a result of discrimination. This distances them from job, income and education opportunities as well as social and community networks and activities. They have little access to power and decision-making bodies and thus often feel powerless and unable to take control of the decisions that affect their day-to-day lives. Put simply, social exclusion is the combination of policies, systems, structures, attitudes and behaviours which result in some individuals being sidelined, left out or left behind. Social exclusion can affect all age groups but it demands particular attention from the youth field because it produces deep and long-term damage to the living conditions, social and economic participation, emotional life, and health status of young people. It also contributes to the intergenerational transmission of poverty. When young people experience insecurity in terms of living standards, political or social isolation, feelings of estrangement and unhealthy lifestyles these can aggravate pre-existing conditions of social exclusion.
