"HAPPY INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY" This year, International Volunteer Day (IVD) highlights volunteers contributing to inclusion, and Sustainable Development Goal 10, reducing inequality within and among countries. The terms volunteering, volunteerism and voluntary activities refer to a wide range of activities, including traditional forms of mutual aid and self-help, formal service delivery and other forms of civic participation, undertaken of free will, for the general public good and where monetary reward is not the principal motivating factor (A/RES/56/38). Within this conceptual framework, at least four different types of volunteer activity can be identified: mutual aid or self-help; service to others; participation or civic engagement; and advocacy or campaigning. "By empowering people to act,and by increasing interactions between groups, volunteering can promote recognition of the inherent value of all people regardless of gender, age, ethnic background, disability or sexuality. Volunteerism is universal and, when accessible to everyone, can become a powerful equalizer." The United Nations (UN) annually observes the International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development on December 5. The day, which is also known as International Volunteer Day (IVD), gives volunteers a chance to work together on projects and campaigns promoting their contributions to economic and social development at local, national and international levels. The act of volunteering is found in all cultures, languages, and religions. Each year, hundreds of millions of people volunteer their time and skills to help make the world a better place. When they volunteer, they help to improve the lives of others. And when they volunteer, they also gain a greater sense of belonging to their communities. The theme for the 2019 International Volunteer Day (IVD) is "Volunteer for an inclusive future". Highlighting SDG 10 and the pursuit of equality – including inclusion – through volunteerism. Volunteering provides opportunities for people, particularly those often excluded, to concretely impact their own lives and play a constructive role in their communities by volunteering their time and skills. Through volunteerism, communities around the world often experience strengthened solidarity and inclusion. Considering the hours they contribute, we are talking about the equivalent of over 125 million full-time workers – according to a study published by John Hopkins University. • Approximately one in four volunteers contribute their time and skills through organizations and the rest do so directly, helping their neighbours as well as their communities. • In terms of economic impact, estimates place the value of volunteer work at US$ 1.348 trillion or 2.4 per cent of the entire global economy. The International Volunteer Day will be celebrated on the 5th of December. The tagline for IVD-2019 Campaign is “Volunteer for an Inclusive Future”. Considering participation of youth and volunteers as critical for averting the threats and challenges to sustainable development, including the impacts of climate change, unemployment, poverty, gender inequality, conflict, and migration. The 2019 Campaign in India seeks to engage school and college students to raise awareness about the SDGs and promoting inclusion, diversity, non- discrimination and reduce inequalities in society.
