I am currently going through the first half of VH wip, so here's one of my favorite interactions between Ryder and Eryx, from when Ryder was still a grump (he never stops fully being a grump but Eryx grows on him.)

“Yeah, but we haven’t talked that much and since we had that whole ‘i saved you, you saved me’ moment, I thought we should get to know each other better.” oh gods, no. The kid continued, “and also that whole breaking into my house thing. After all that, we have to be somewhere near being friends.”  “One: I didn't break into your house, the door was open. And two: we are not friends.” “Well after we get to know each other, then we will be friends!” Don’t murder him. don’t murder him. don’t murder him.

Name one thing their parent taught them

This one was harder to answer than I thought. Ryder wasn't home that much (he was basically in boarding school), so he wasn't that close to his parents. But one thing he'll never forget is his father telling him to always stand up for what he believes, to take what he holds dear and keep it close.

2. Do they like children?

If you ask Ryder, he'll list countless reasons why him and children do not mix well. He's the kind of guy who talks to a one-year old like they're an adult. Hand him a child, and he'll have a brief panic but eventually enjoy having someone to share his latest antique find with, even if their responses come in babbles that he takes completely seriously.

And then despite all his grumbling, he goes and adopts Eryx (a child in his head) quicker than he'd ever admit.

3. Forgiveness or vengeance?

Vengeance. Ryder’s got a knack for holding onto grudges, letting them simmer and fester until he eventually explodes. Given the choice, he’ll always lean towards vengeance, no hesitation, even if it’s against his better judgment

Spontaneously adopt a child

well hands down, Ryder. It's basically what happens in VH, although it was far from Ryder's intentions. It's spontaneous in a sense because he didn't realize what was happening until it was too late

Have the loudest sneeze

Harder one, if the Ghost was alive, then it'd definitely be him. Though, even as a ghost, they'd probably sneeze really loud just to bother Ryder.

Be taken the least seriously

Definitely, Eryx. He may be the hero of the town but his babyface makes it a little difficult to be taken seriously. He just radiates sunshine energy.

Writing Update

Re-wrote the first three chapters (11k words)

Edited up to chapter 12

Realized that the plot started to drag after that chapter. I think I just need something to break up the monotone vibe. The path I'm going to test out is starting the murder mystery subplot from chapter 13 instead of chapter 20

That's my next step to figure out how to incorporate the subplot seamlessly.

I am nowhere near the challenge goal yall set for me (don't even know how I'm going to) but I'm back on the bandwagon so woo!

Snippet from the chapter where Ryder and Eryx meet for the first time:

It's honestly ironic that the first time we met was when he tried to "save" me. Albeit, 'save' is an undoubtedly strong word for the whole thing; all he really did was just show up. I guess that's just what heroes do -- they stick their abnormally large heroic noses in places they don't belong.

👋 would you choose to live in your world, if you could?

I would definitely choose to live in the Isles, even if I'm not part of the lucky few born with magic (otherwise called Essence). The main focus of the story is on the island Klysra, which is just off the coast of the main capital island. Klysra has rocky cliffs and sparse beaches scattered throughout the coastline, but the main center of the island, nicknamed the Labriynthe, is tightly-packed bustling place. My favorite part would be the wooden walkways built on the sides of houses to connect buildings and forms a network of elevated paths and communal spaces.

In other words, it would be a very cool place to live!

💬 - Dialogue or prose?

definitely dialogue! in fact, when writing a chapter, I usually write dialogue first and then force myself to fill in prose. The initial attempts at writing a chapter basically look like a movie script.

It's when you don't want the attention, that you get all of it. (I'm kidding! This is why I love the writing community; I got the push I needed to write!)

I now need to write, as of right now, around 15k. I plan on doing (hopefully) a big 10k writing session on Saturday!

I need the motivation, and i honestly don't think anyone is going to see this, so for every note, i will write 500 words of VH wip.

in fact, If i get enough notes, i will share one line of what I've written for every 1000 words i write.
