[Carthusia - Via Camerelle - 8/10]

Via Camerelle is considered the “main drag” for shopping on the island of Capri, which is itself off the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Capri is a verdant, sun-soaked location both immediately charming and lightyears out of the average plebeian’s league.  

I was fortunate to have visited the island in 2014. Part of the reason for the visit was to see Carthusia and sample its wares in person. Originally I had my heart set on something that smelled more spicy or incense-based, but the shopkeeper convinced me to buy Via Camerelle instead. 

So, did I end up with an expensive paperweight?

I lost my original version in a car accident, but acquired another bottle not long ago. That alone should tell you something - willing to shell out for it, twice!

It’s obvious that the high-quality parts whirl in calibrated harmony like the silver wires and pendulums on a perfect artisanal mobile. The fragrance is never too offensive, never too “masculine” or “feminine,” and never too warm or inviting.  This is the scent of your cherished, but inscrutable friend. Fiercely genderless and polite, is this friend. 

At first it smells just as a freshly crushed leaf from my childhood dwarf lemon tree - a slightly raw lemon/bergamot note that adds some shadow to the fragrance. There is also a strangely edible component. This I take to be the marjoram. Marjoram is at an interesting intersection of citrus and medicinal/pine/minty. It hums in the background throughout, finding a suitably unisex ground between the citruses and aquatic-smelling florals.

If I were to draw a comparison, I’d say the smooth, shiny android from Mugler’s Cologne takes a vacation to Italy and gets lost among the street markets.
