4.9 Days to Load 8GB of OCLC Data into Sesame 2.7.7
Jeff Antoniuk and I have been working to get the triples for the 1 million most commonly held books in libraries as reported by OCLC in a Sesame (2.7.7) triple store. With 8GB of data this took longer than expected and required an intervention in the parameters of the store.
The problem was we kept receiving the following error when trying to load the data into a native store with all the vanilla options:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space at java.lang.AbstractStringBuilder.<init>
The trick was to modify console.sh to use:
JAVA_OPT=-Xmx12000m
Once this was done the entire process took 425486808 milliseconds (or 4.9 days) on a server with 12GB RAM, 4 cores, and a 512GB disk.
I'm worried now about how long it will take to load in all the RDF data from VIAF.
Article from the new issue of Code4Lib Journal on linking library authority data with Wikipedia.
"The positive reception to the project at Wikipedia affirms the strength of libraries in performing authority control and proves the utility of this work in the era of linked data. The project offers a blueprint for similar efforts to integrate library data with Wikipedia and, perhaps even more importantly, has built good will for the library community with Wikipedia. At a time when many libraries worry about keeping up with information in a digital world, collaborations like this one offer an exciting glimpse of what libraries can still do to help connection their users with high-quality information resources." --Maximilian Klein and Alex Kyrios

Pull quote: "Two years ago, after giving a talk about VIAF at a RERO meeting, there were several questions about how they could not only participate in VIAF, but have a direct way of adding and modifying VIAF clusters. Thinking about how we could do this we realized that we might be able to build something that addressed both external and internal issues with VIAF. Not surprisingly, we started with our internal issues, with an eye towards the possibility of more general use. We are calling the result xA (for Extended VIAF Authority) and it is now public at http://viaf.org/hosted/xa/."
