This home on Bagley in Corktown is quite popular amongst photographers these days, and for good reason. I mean, look at it. From the classic bracketed cornice to the lentils and those great bay windows, it's pretty much a perfect Victorian house. Frederick Swaine was a native of Dorset, England. Upon visiting Ypsilanti in 1871, he decided to relocated there permanently. The following year, he entered the malt industry. That same year, Swaine purchased the Malt House, a former school located at North River Street and East Forest Avenue, from future brothers -in - laws Worger George and L. C. Washington, significantly enlarging its dimensions to 50 x 90 feet and 3 levels. In 1873, he built this beautiful, 2 - story Italianate residence next to the Malt House. The Swaine House was among the first in Ypsi to have electricity. Swaine married Eliza George in 1874. The couple had 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters. The sons died before age 3, whille the daughters both lived long, spending their entire lives in the family home before both passing away in 1968. Under Swaine, the business thrived, with an increased output 40,000 bushels in 1880 from 11,000 in 1874. Unfortunately, Frederick Swaine died suddenly in 1897. This small Victorian workers' cottage at 1662 Bagley (174 Baker) was built around 1877, possibly by James A. Chubb, a carpenter by trade. The home would go on to be owned by several Irish women. Corktown has a long tradition of Irish women ownership.
