Sherlock Newbie Fic Rec a Day: A Beginner's Guide to Apiology

This is the first entry in my Sherlock newbie fic rec a day project.  In general, these posts are meant to give a friend of mine who has never read Sherlock fic some idea of where to start.  Please feel free to send me messages or comment if you have suggestions.

I'm coming out swinging, folks.

A Beginner's Guide to Apiology, by VictoryCandescence (on AO3). Single chapter, 10952 words.  Rating: Mature.

I return to Beginners Guide often, to revel in the writing as well as to just revisit the story.  The pacing and tone of this fic are so, so lovely.  John and Sherlock are beautifully drawn, perfectly imagined in their retirement years, and the relationship is, well, absolutely fucking gorgeous.  (Sorry, but it is.) This fic has its share of heartbreak, but it also gives us hope and magic.  An added bonus is a fantastic characterization of Mary as a woman we (and John) can love without hesitation.  And there is no more perfect last line in a story, anywhere.  Read it.  You'll thank me later.
