“Come with me, Sansa. I want you to come with me,” Jon pleaded. Sansa shut her eyes and sighed at the gentle caress of his calloused hand on her cheek.

Sansa could not find the words to say, how much she craved to escape the dread her future laid before her. And how much she wanted to run away with him, and he never failed to ask her every time and every night they met in secret, after every passionate embrace. Their lovemaking had turned increasingly passionate and urgent, for a nagging thought plagued them - that every night could be their last.

“But how? He knows where I go, what I do, I am tied to him because of an oath my father made. I cannot leave and taint my family’s honour. Surely you understand that, my love,” Sansa reminded him, her own words stinging her to tears.

Jon clasped her hand in his and kissed it gently. Yes, he understood what she meant. He, too was once from a noble family, till betrayal and jealousy took everything he loved away from him. He had come this far, his scars and broken bones barely healed, were stubborn evidence he was meant to fight for his life and future. And Sansa was his life and his future. There was nothing else he’d live for if he did not have her by his side.

“One final fight and I am free. They promised my freedom if I win this fight. And I will. Meet me here tomorrow, after the feast, Sansa. I have paid for passage out of this land and we can start a new life together. Far away from here. Please believe me, my love,” Jon whispered, looking into her pale blue eyes, fighting back sobs. So near, yet so far.

Sansa reached over and pressed her lips to his, feeling a sudden wetness on her cheeks. She wiped his tears away and smiled.

“Yes, my love. I do.”

And even if you fall and don’t return to me, I shall join you. In heaven, she thought.
