So I discovered that tarantulas don't bite you when you're in camera mode, but instead follow right behind you like they're about to. (not pictured here is other spiders will shake their legs threateningly at you while one spider is already following)
I got bitten a lot while gathering this information. There were a lot of tarantulas on this island (up to 4 spiders at a time!) I caught as many as my pockets could hold and made BANK (tarantulas are worth 8,000 bells!)
