Artists statement:
Working with the concept of perception, our group was inspired by illusion artist Felice Varini, who creates site-specific installations with 2D shapes which, when viewed at the right angle, combine to display a single design. Our work 'A blank stair' (2018) aims to continue Varini's practice through the renewal of an otherwise ordinary site into something worthy of interest. The primary medium used was yellow and blue painter’s tape, intentionally chosen to stand out against the dull walls. The imposing, target-like design also worked to catch the attention of viewers - it’s circular shape contrasting the straight edges and sharp angles of the stairwell, therefore bringing attention to its original, interesting form that had gone unacknowledged within everyday use. To accurately form this precise shape the image was displayed onto the walls with a projector during production, allowing it to be traced with tape. The installation first appears as the viewer walks down the stairs, developing into an unrecognizable mass of curves and lines which forces the audience to further investigate the work in order to understand it's design, therefore appreciating the neglected space and changing their perception of the area - now viewing it as something interesting and full of possibilities.
