Kill for Peace, Again, 1987

Tuli Kupferberg (1923-2010) was a poet, cartoonist, pacifist anarchist and the co-founder of the satirical rock band, The Fugs.

In 1965 Kupferberg originally wrote the song "Kill for Peace" in opposition to the Vietnam War. The song's lyrics were continually modified to reflect the current politics of war. The lyrics provided here are from a version written in 1987, when Ronald Reagan was president.

An estimated 10,000 people gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square to protest the Vietnam War on March 17, 1968, before marching to the U.S. embassy in Grosvenor Square where hundreds of police awaited. The protest, led by activist Tariq Ali and actor Vanessa Redgrave, had been peaceful, but as they approached the embassy, mounted police charged the protesters, who in turn charged the embassy. Chaos ensued, with firecrackers, smoke bombs, rocks, and clumps of dirt and sod being thrown. Over 200 people were arrested, and 86 were injured, with 50 requiring hospitalization, half of which were cops. “Street Fighting Man” is considered the Rolling Stones most political song. It was released on 1968’s classic Beggars Banquet. In addition to Tariq Ali and the March 17 protest, the May 1968 Left Bank student riots in Paris also served as inspiration for the song.

Performed at Woodstock in 1969, this satiric song became an anthem in the movement against the Vietnam War.  Country Joe McDonald has performed the song countless times since, and over the last decade often changes the name “Vietnam” to “Iraq” or “Afghanistan”. On May 4th 1970, Kent State University banded together to protest the Vietnam War. Four students were shot by the National Guard while nine others were injured. To this day, Kent State remembers the dead for simply expressing their First Amendment right. I am a Kent State student as well as a United States citizen. Raising awareness to expose governmental corruption such as this is of the utmost importance for this generation is the voice of change - as these people once were.
