[If Only] “Hey, Frank. You ever wonder what the gods are doing?” “What to do you mean, Mark?” • “Well, I mean you and I are ants. We do the same thing day in and day out. And he sits there. Does something. Then, he just leaves. Sometimes for a short period. Sometimes for longer. And I just wonder, what he does? I mean, he’s a god, right?” • “You know, Mark, I never thought about that. I guess I just assumed we were living here and collecting things for the Queen, digging tunnels, and occasionally glimpsing the gods as they pass.” •
“Me too, Frank. But sometimes when I see them, I wonder what it is that they do. I mean, look at this one. What kind of god is he? Is he a thoughtful god? Hateful? Is he the one that pours floods over our world and fills our tunnels with dirt? Or is he the one who gives us the gifts that we use to feed the Queen? • “And, Frank, how many gods are there? I’ve seen hundreds of different ones, each one a bit different than the other.” • “Yea, I don’t know Mark. But, maybe we’re not supposed to know. I mean, we are just ants after all. And we’re worker ants at that. Aren’t we only supposed to do what we’re told? We don’t get a say. What we do is important, it keeps the hive going and keeps the Queen happy and alive. So I’m gonna get back to work; and you should, too.” • “Yea. I guess you’re right. But, man. Isn’t it fun to wonder what it would be like to be a god? To imagine what I could do if I were him? Frank, you head on back to the tunnel. I’ll be there in a second. I just wanna look a bit longer.” • “Alright, Mark. But don’t doddle. We still have a lot to do today.” • “I bet we don’t have important things to do like he does. God, if only I could be a god, I’d do some amazing things.
