Understood well the intricate horror that he had moored his Jayce to. He acknowledged that the eternity of mourning awaiting him was his hallowed duty—the cosmic price he must pay for his profligate pursuit of perfection. He doesn't waste effort attempting to hide or mask it; wears the grief as a periapt to the fact that he was human, too.

That he had loved. Once. Lifetimes ago.

He never anticipated to be freed from it. He never let himself believe that he could be free—or that he could exempt his Jayce from it, either. Learned some centuries prior to find purpose in trying to save the other versions of Jayce: their universes, their love. To live on beside the relic of his love. For the flowers blooming from it to be a sufficient form of testament to the life it once held. Tries to tell himself that it's enough despite the longing; knows it's still more than he deserves.

Some irony and truth apparently lay in the saying: "Good things come to those who wait."

It's an already arbitrary day made furtherly trivial by the fact that it wasn't really his birthday—the orphanage he'd been dumped at never had a proper DOB to assign to him, so it was really just the anniversary of the day his creator decided they didn't want him anymore. He wasn't one for celebrations, anyway.

His partner Jayce, on the other hand, loves any excuse for conviviality. Viktor assumes that he'll be able to escape any forced ceremony since they've been forced into long-distance over the last year, but the package he arrives home to shipped from Jayce's address—alongside the incessant text inquiries he'd gotten all day pestering him about when he'd be home—prove him wrong on that front.

Viktor promptly discovers that his stance on birthdays might need reevaluation.

"One such fact still being that I shouldn't be here." he mumbles in response, chapped lips catching on the plush mounds of his palm. "So why are you, then?"

In a timeline where Jayce fails to fulfill his mission of killing The Herald, both are forced to face the uncertain fate that awaits them and address the fallout their mutual mistakes leave on the world.
