hey boy don't kill yourself. green's dictionary of slang is available online and allows you to explore 500 years of english vulgarity. you can search by part of speech, source, time period, etymology, and usage. there's a whole category for gay slang. they even have specific citations listed so you can see the exact context for yourself. boy did you know that in 1927 "to kneel at the altar" was slang for "to sodomize"
Princess: an effeminate and relatively youthful male homosexual or lesbian (1931-4)
Daffodil: effeminate young man (1925)
To throw a fuck into: to have sex with (1919)
Top sergeant: a masculine lesbian (1939) [‘she takes command of the girls’ privates’]
Lily: penis (1919)

Also a lot of early 20th century vulgarity is recorded in Letter from My Father, which is a collection of letters published by a man who's dad was, in short, a major slut and human disaster who wrote about his sex life for his son. It's insane. You can find copies of it online & it's a wild fucking read (literally!) and I think a really interesting look at the life of a person who goes against our stereotypes of what people in the past were "supposed" to be like.

note for writers: these are dated to the first time they were recorded, not necessarily to their first use. I imagine for many of these, they came about naturally through spoken language before they were written down anywhere. This is especially true of more underground slang because it's probably being recorded (in ways we still have) the least. So if you wanna use a term but it's a little off date-wise, give yourself some wiggle room.
also gonna take this moment to highlight two more i found recently:

when you’re a gay lion and you accidentally tried to introduce your lesbian lioness friend to one of her own exes at a gay bar and she goes into the bathroom and bitches you out for not being able to tell her endlessly rotating cast of girlfriends apart which isn’t really fair because first of all they all keep dyeing their hair different colors and second of all she keeps getting back together with different ones at different times and meanwhile you’ve been “single” for like 8 months but are spending a lot of time with one specific guy who works at your old co-op and were going to excitedly tell her about it tonight but now you’ve ruined the whole subject of dating by trying to introduce her to her own ex at a gay bar (which is a watering hole. because you’re lions.)
i have now rewatched project hail mary uhhh 4? 5x in the last like. 3 days since i first saw it. which means i am ready to issue my formal complaints as a general book-elitist when it comes to adaptions. and i’m nitpicky. sue me. for my own record keeping mostly and i might come back to add more when i inevitably do another re-read later:
first and foremost: why is there no françois lelerc!?? where is my climatologist having a moral crisis every 5 mins?! what the fuck. i kept feeling like someone important was missing and the second watch i was like !!! WHERE TF IS LELERC
and with ^ that in mind, the antarctica scene as a whole being like. a blip. that’s barely explained. come tf onnnn that is SUCH an important detail it deserved more screen time and more dialogue/importance overall. why are we not discussing stratt willingly dooming a significant portion of the population & causing horrible climate change for the general survival or her subsequent grief of it. i need her committing more crimes and eating more sins as she was intended to, thank you.
also somewhat in line with the above but, in general, the lack of screen time or scenes where the “background” characters (yao, ilyulhina, dubois & shapiro. even carl. & stratt, but they give her a bit more) have actual impact other than basically being plot pushers or dead wife effect. i get that most of them are supposed to be haunting the narrative. but the lack of attention to their own personal scenes makes them feel flat, and makes the impact of the memories grace gets over his journey feel… lessened.
taking away the scene where dubois and shapiro very bluntly tell grace “we’re having sex” and he gets all awkward and flustered and uncomfortable. i was SO looking forward to that and instead they… have a nod to it and then stratt sings karaoke. okay. i guess.

in general, as much as i loved seeing rocky & grace so much & know they’re the MC’s/main plot, i really. reaaaally wish there was more life given to the flashbacks and side characters/side plots
the changes to the scene of how they put grace into the coma. where’s his panicking while wrongly imprisoned scene? that is important to me.
wish stratt was a bit less likable when she reveals her true colors. controversial. i know. but the book does SUCH a great job of portraying the strategic horror of her choice and how she sort of always had grace on the back burner as an as-needed sacrificial lamb
wish they maintained the book’s initial design of the ship juuuust a little more. it doesn’t feel at all like what i imagined though i appreciate the adaptation to something realistic cause ngl, had trouble wrapping my head around the diagram, but i was overly attached to The Shape™️ of it for some reason. weird ass cone-head ass spaceship.
in general, great movie, especially given the author is such a massive fuckhead. MGM unfortunately does make banger productions. i also have just as much to praise about it as i do complaints which i’ll likely list sometime later but, in general, i do think the book does the story more justice and really highlights the horror and humanity of everything & everyone. i really hate they removed lelerc, he felt so important to me in the books especially insofar as hos role as a foil to stratt :( and i wish the side characters weren’t just sorta shown in passing & given more love. i think me & most others would have happily taken an additional hour of footage haha.
tl;dr read the book, if you haven’t! you’re missing sooo much with just the movie imo.
