Video: Stella Donnelly - “Old Man”

The music of Stella Donnelly breezes through with gently stroked guitar pop melancholia, yet the words found within the Australian artist’s songwriting are more bluntly cold and daggering -- Intentionally inked lyrics that deal with very serious subject matters such as misogyny and sexual abuse that let you know she is using her platform with writing inviting listening expressions as a means to resonate within the larger pop culture bubble, and hopefully help burst toxicity out of the picture altogether. The blueprint for her work began a year ago with the release of her EP Thrush Metal, a collection of acoustic folk outlines filled in with tragic details, and will now become wholly visible with the release of her debut full-length Beware of the Dogs, set for release in early March on Secretly Canadian.

You can hear that along with Donnelly’s bold ruminations, her music is filled in with muscle and heart in seeing her project grow into a full band effort featuring bassist Jennifer Aslett, guitarist George Foster and drummer Talya Valenti. They provide additional layers of flesh in its dreamy soundscape on the album’s lead single “Old Man”, as Donnelly’s vocals emerge over crisp cut chords and sun-soaked production with an effortless cool in her presence. It makes her takedown of creepy predatory dudes in the old guard (or any guard for that matter) all the more easier to pull off. “Boy, if you touch her again / I'll tell your wife and your kids about that time / 'Cause this is not '93 / You lost your spot on the team, you're out of line,” she bats her choice of words clearly. The listen’s video, directed by Fiona Jane Burgess, compliments its content, as Donnelly and two friends study up on a book entitled Every Woman’s Guide To Self Defense without letting any fears get in the way of living their best lives.

Stella Donnelly’s Beware of the Dogs will be released March 8th on Secretly Canadian.
