My approach to the ship was originally one of necessity, tbh - I wanted to write Johnny/Roy but I didn't want female characters to suffer for my gay ship, but I didn't want to delete her from existence either. Also, I hate writing that particular brand of relationship trouble

So, the obvious solution to me was making it at least the "consensual parallel relationships" kinda polyamory

And Roy/Joanne & Johnny/Roy is a great dynamic for a lot of fics/shipping purposes, but making it full Johnny/Roy/Joanne gets you some really fun bonus dynamics:

more obvious opportunities to play around with Joanne as a character

potentially more domestic family shenanigans

The idea of Johnny finding himself a whole-ass family!

That said, I'm fond of the ship (and the fics written for it) but I'm hardly the expert on it, and I'm having a surprisingly hard time putting this one into words, so if y'all can think of something to add, I'd love to hear it.

Looks like a ichneumon wasp! Don't worry that long 'stinger' is actually an ovipositor, not a stinger at all! They're a species of parasitoid wasps, which means they lay their eggs in or on a host bug to hatch (which usually kills the host). They're just kind of... scary and icky looking, but can't hurt you.
