Marigolds, an endless array of food, chaos and love aren’t the only reasons why Monsoon Wedding by Mira Nair is one of the best films ever!!
We get to be privy to different kinds of relationships during the never-ending prep for the big fat Indian wedding; both old and new. This isn’t a review tbh. I am just sharing my thoughts on something I particularly appreciated in the movie. tw: child abuse/SA
There is a scene in the climax when Lalit (Naseeruddin Shah) kisses Ria’s (Shefali Shah) forehead right after he has asked Tej (Rajat Kapoor) to leave speaks a thousand words. Ria knows that she has an adult/father figure who will protect her no matter what, listen to what she has to say and love her for who she is.
He says , “ I will protect my children from myself if I have to.” In our homes, where most of the time we are shushed and asked to adjust to the comments, the touches or teasing of our own family members, relatives or friends, Lalit taking a step to break that cycle is truly poignant.
I am just sad it took me this long to watch this piece of art🫶🏽
