“jason’s allowed to get away with the crimes he commits and the hurtful things he says/does.”
ignoring fact he often either gets beaten, shunned, and even killed (implied in UTRH) as consequences for his actions.
you mean the man that has revived a murderous clown multiple times knowing damn well the clown will continue to kill and sow chaos, and will escape every time he gets arrested-
the man that regularly fucks criminals that are on the same level as jason in terms of criminality-
the man that is known for mass surveillance and using violence to fight what he defines as justice in a punitive manner-
the man that constantly dismisses the ways he hurts his children when they refuse to serve a narrative he constructed and enacts in his perpetual self-flagellation fueled by grief (and arrogance at times)-
you mean that man “lets” his son “get away” with everything?
lol right.
but yeah, let’s keep it black and white. jason is evil af and the bats are gods and goddesses of virtue and morality. and somehow batman who is revered as the god of thirty thousand “second chances” and redemption should stop giving chances to his resurrected son.

The show will never lean into this but I think that it would be interesting if Marcus and Luca were the parallel to Syd and Carmy if or once they reach eventual stability.
The interactions between Marcus and Luca were small, but I think we got enough information that humanizes them on a good scale to compare them to fully fleshed out characters such as Syd and Carmy (Marcus more so than Luca, but you get what I mean).
Marcus’ situation with his mother, the fact he took on the responsibility as opposed to his younger brother, his football career failing and having to find passion in baking. Mirrors Syd strained agreement with her father regarding following her own passion after her failure and later on her also having to take on the responsibility over her father’s health. Both have an intimate relationship with failure and responsibility, something that has flourished into resilience and adaptability in the face of absolute chaos.
Luca’s clearly strained relationship with his family given how he choked up while saying he has a younger sister “somewhere,” admitting he was a troubled child (bad grades and possibly behavior), and his own self-centered phase in assuming he was the best; mirrors Carmy’s strained relationship with his mother and brother. He clearly has a competitive personality both due to Mikey but also as he ties in his self-worth to cooking—when someone else succeeds he inadvertently sees it as an “attack” on himself (self-centeredness). Not so much an attack in the sense of jealousy, though he does feel it, but more so opening the pandora box inside his head that screams “You’re not the best at this, then you’re worthless to your loved ones.”
Carmy’s self-hatred manifests beyond him being unable to accept he is the source of inspiration for others (Sydney), that his passion for cooking wasn’t solely due to his family—it’s also his. He self-sabotage every time he is on the verge of accepting change, this is why he has such an aversion to accepting Sydney’s admiration and call for a partner as opposed to friend, because he cannot let go of the worth he has outside of what he tried to prove to his family (Mikey, his mom).
Luca seems to have found the answer to these problems, both in terms of his art/cooking and trauma. Luca is open to the euphoria of being admired and seen for his abilities by someone that truly cares for the craftsmanship as opposed to being awarded that validation by (possibly) his family, he no longer seeks to prove the sentiment of “I am good for something.”
Luca is open to acceptance, both of himself and of others (specifically other creatives). This ties in with him embracing the “Luca #33,” clearly being affected by Marcus reminding him that although Pippen (Luca) wasn’t the best, his efforts and passion aren’t unnoticed nor pointless (Pippen being in the Hall of Fame, Luca being a renowned chef). Luca inspired Marcus, Marcus’ willingness to be open to change and to be expressive with his love for the craft inspired Luca—and that in itself is not only the proof his efforts have meaning, but also that Luca is confident enough with his self-worth to eventually see Marcus supersede him.
These details correlate with Syd and Carmy in demonstrating that if people with the same mentor and mentee relationship entailing admiration and partnership intertwined, packed with their own demons and philosophies are capable of standing on an equal and even ground, then so will Syd and Carmy be able to eventually reach that.
Basically, Marcus and Luca acting as a mirror of “what if?” or, y’know, “how about you get there already?” lol
(There’s definitely more to be said about Marcus, Syd, and Carmy; but I went for a bit more surface level reading on this post).
Maybe I’m not interpreting Bakugou’s character right, but isn’t him asking Izuku to join his agency under him, as in an underling, out of character? (I’m not sure if the sidekick aspect is factual)
Hori wrote Katsuki after the war and in the first part of the epilogue eager for Izuku to compete with him again. Wouldn’t working under him go completely against his supposed characterization?
One thing would be opening an agency together, since that puts them at equal grounds in terms of business, and I don’t see why Izuku wouldn’t be able to be considered his own hero since he’s the one who defeated the “big bad.” Basically, both would retain their autonomy. Being an employee is another thing.
Like, I kind of see the call back to when they were children and Katsuki would play about having his agency and the underlings and whatever, but why maintain something indicative of regression instead of moving forward in an epilogue? Especially when it’s been sort of established they were moving on from that childish view of their goals they held on tightly (I still stand their view on hero culture as a whole didn’t change much other than helping each other, and that’s about it).
Obviously, Katsuki hasn’t completely “grown,” he is still abrasive, but when it comes to his motivation, this whole agency thing is so unnecessary. I see the direction of it being an opportunity for Izuku to finally stand his ground, but I think there were other avenues for him to do that (especially society-wise).
But anyway, the story and characters has been dissonant for a great part of the last chapters, but this epilogue served as an even greater setback (in my opinion).
Does anybody else feel this is out of character for Katsuki?
Love Endeavor all you want, but please don’t be delusional about what he’s done canonically 😅
The number of people convinced Touya, Fuyumi, and Natsuo weren’t abused makes me concerned about media comprehension nowadays. I’m not an expert and certainly not as well articulated as some fans, but this stuff is missing surface-level interpretation.
The dismissal of neglect as abuse is rampant in the fandom as a whole and shows people aren’t aware of how it mentally destroys a child. The dismissal of what drives a person to self-harm is also rampant (with both Touya and Toga).
“Child neglect can have severe detrimental effects on children’s physical health, psychological well-being, cognitive and academic abilities, and social development. The severity, timing and chronicity of neglect influence the extent to which children are negatively impacted. Children’s development is cumulative in nature, such as children’s ability to accomplish new developmental tasks builds upon achievement of previous developmental milestones. Children who are neglected early in life may suffer impairment and subsequent developmental tasks.” (x)
People often read the scene in which Touya confronts Rei as him being a little shit and nothing more, but it confirms Touya knows (and has known for quite some time) that their family isn’t built with genuine love; it is a contract. This is major for a child his age.
I don’t think some people understand what that does to a child psychologically. To know not only the twisted notion of love in their family is conditional, but also their existence (which is why Touya emphasizes, “I didn’t even know why I existed”).
But this is a perfect example of how Horikoshi’s backpedaling writing tricks the viewer in forgetting that Endeavor is central to his family’s suffering.
Hori instead places a part of the blame on Touya by urging the viewers to see him as a “naturally evil” child. However, once the image of Enji as an abuser has been established, and when the relationship the family seems to have with Touya is demonstrated through Natsuo's outburst and Fuyumi's dedication to his shrine, Touya’s actions still come across as a child desperate to find meaning in their existence and be loved again. Going from golden child to scapegoat at the snap of fingers is quite traumatic.
It’s kind of crazy how people will be so quick to blame Touya for not being a "perfect" victim when he was 8-13 years old. People blame him as far back as when he was 16 years old. The creator of the video these comments belong to blames Touya for not calling out to Endeavor when he went back home, as if Touya wasn’t witnessing his father abusing Shouto, like 🧍
Liking these characters isn’t wrong, but refusing to acknowledge Enji’s role in the downfall of his son is. Enji being a hero and vowing to atone for abusing his family, doesn’t immediately discount the pain every family member went through, nor does it discount the fact he had 20-15 years to realize what he was doing; meanwhile, his children are expected to be more virtuous and do so while suffering in silence.
I hate to be the person complaining about fanfics, but reading Leopika fics can be a bit difficult when you kin Kurapika more so than the other characters lol.
I feel like there’s barely any emphasis on the fact that he’s grappling with the literal genocide of his people. It’s not one person or some members of his family, it’s literally everyone. Everyone and everything he’s ever known, completely gone yet simultaneously haunting him as parts of them can’t be laid to rest properly (the eyes) and sold as some exotic commodity, completely dehumanizing their bodies even in death--I also wager it is part of their culture to be buried "whole."
He’s carrying that guilt and the fear it’ll happen again to the people he loves and who love him. He’s carrying the legacy of every Kurta clan member on his shoulders. He’s grappling with the disappearance of their culture, sans himself attempting to keep it alive amidst revenge and a quest that may very well kill him. He doesn't want to do the things he's done, but rather views it as a necessity to achieve his goal (to catch a monster, you become one, essentially).*
If this was One Piece, I’d somewhat understand the vitriol in majority of the fics—how frustrating it is that Kura doesn’t open up to his friends, since One Piece begs the characters to trust their friends wholeheartedly (thinking about Nico Robin and Trafalgar Law in relation to Kurapika). But Hunter x Hunter is entirely different in its approach to trauma and interpersonal relationships in general.
I know it doesn’t excuse how Kurapika’s coping mechanisms affect the people who love him; if anything I appreciate how fic writers explore the pain of watching someone you love trying to fight alone and fighting in self-destructive ways. This aforementioned aspect in fics is not what I'm usually picky of, but more so how his trauma is constantly overlooked or underplayed.
The comparison to Gon is something I also don't mind in terms of how hard-headed and self-centered they can be when it comes to their goals (tunnel vision). However, it is not a 1-1 comparison. It always goes back to the fact Kurapika is carrying a genocide on his back vs. Gon carrying the loss of one person. Above everything else, grief is absolutely valid. But I do think there's such a thing as someone grappling with a person's death vs. an entire society and subsequently their culture.
(Much is similar when it comes to aforementioned OP characters, especially Trafalgar Law, when their loss is often compared to other characters but it doesn't quite amount to the same level psychologically and physically. For example, his loss to Blackbeard is often compared to the Strawhats losing to Kuma, when it is entirely different given the context of both characters and crews' backstories and world connections).
Killing the Phantom Troupe is one thing I don't necessarily mind when other characters urge him to let go, since killing them won't bring his clan back. What vexes me boils down to the mission of laying his clan to rest being treated as something easy to give up, I feel like it loses sentimentality. Especially when the fics, and occasionally metas, usually entail every single character shitting on Kurapika for essentially not giving that up.
If there’s any character who hates Kurapika with a passion, is Kurapika. No other character needs to do that for him because he does it plenty for himself, given both his survivor’s guilt and the guilt of hurting the people he cares for.
Anyway, I rarely complain publicly like this, nor do I like to. Following etiquette, I don’t keep reading the stories that aren't for me, and choose to work on my personal WIPs, of course. This is a vent, if anything. It’s just hard when the fandom at large seem to mischaracterize the your favorite blorbo 😅
*Disclaimer. I wouldn't even bother putting this here if I didn't see people arguing Kurapika is willfully enabling the upper class' oppression just because he works for rich folk, plus claiming he himself subscribes to capitalist and oligarchical ideologies compared to Leorio, when that's not true at all lmaooo. Kurapika came from a clan that has deep connection to nature, they were far removed from society at large and lived through deep communal relationships and "trade," they used what was available to them; I wouldn't be surprised if there was little to no monetary system in place. His notion of what is honorable and what isn't has nothing to do with capitalism, it boiled down to doing what is right at the cost of yourself, that's why he is literally sacrificing himself to avenge his clan. Him disagreeing with Leorio on reasons why to become a hunter and having to work for the Nostrade are not AT ALL congruent with agreeing to a capitalist and oligarchical view, what are you people on?
having to rewatch MHA for a video I’m working on about anime and the famous “but it’s realistic” arguments nowadays is so painful lmaooo.
although, rage aside, it is interesting to realize how it can be a social experiment on propaganda (that many fans fell for, tbh). during my first watch I didn’t realize just how rampant literally every moment the villains present solid criticism about their society then getting interrupted by some power-up or some random hero appearing to help is.
the way the interruption helps the heroes to completely disregard what is being brought up, then the anime trying to convince the public the heroes listened to a single thing being said when they proceed to just continue the fight without any moment of substantial self-reflection.
the music is also a huge factor, insanely epic for moments that the heroes are acting in self-serving ways, or just straight up spewing empty platitudes.
nothing quite hits the rage episode 124 (chapter 293) makes me feel though. sheesh. the bs on that ep imparting from heroes is too much.
