[I am excited to share with you this posting of a sampling of collections correspondence for a debt of what turned out to be $7.85. I am personally in awe of the persistence and politeness of C.W. Strom’s collection of this debt over a four year period, as The Great Depression took toll on business. He contacted members of the lodge and the Viking Temple to pursue collection. Here are some highlights from the letters:]

6/4/32 “Have moved up in your neighborhood where is is peace and quiet. Not much business as yet but this thing cannot last forever.” [regarding Old Irving Park neighborhood and The Great Depression still carrying on] 8/2/33 “Just was wondering if you would remind him as I am hard pressed at the present time and every cent counts. Business is of course shot for us all and the hope is that the administration will be able to pop the thing up so that we do not need to spend another miserable winter like the last one. Our apple tree is still growing but no apples this year as these trees have fruit one year then grow a year. Hoping that you are able to weather the storm and wishing you the very best of luck for the future, I am,...” 4/18/35 “We then take this liberty of sending this letter to your residence with the hope that you will investigate and send a remittance soon as possible. We shall send one to W.P. Robbins, who is your secretary. Thanking you in advance, we are” 9/18/35 - “wish to thank you for the prompt manner in which the lodge paid the old invoices which for some reason had not been paid. This check for $7.85 pays all the accounts to date. Would not have brought to your Lodge’s attention if it was not for the fact that I have been badly pressed for money and this amount did its part. Yours fraternally, Clarence W. Strom”
