an interview with villaz — a talk about synesthesia, euphoria and violin
today's thorns of the future guest is villaz, an electronic & alternative singer and producer from wrocław, poland. many could describe her music as nostalgic and ethereal. villaz's first ever release was "your car", which was later included in the "how it feels to be 19" EP self-released through the polish self-distribution record emuze.me.
thorns of the future: do you prefer making music in polish or english?
villaz: At first I created solely in english. I think the reason was that the language barrier (meaning also the fact that my family did not understand what "attention whore" meant) created some kind of a safe space for me to share my thoughts. Now i grew older, some things changed, and you can get ready for some polish music;)
thorns of the future: what was your first ever live show like?
villaz: My first ever show as villaz was at Transformator in Wrocław, as a guest after a underground fashion show. A few people gathered and my eyes were closed most of the time, because I was so stressed to finally play my own music. After the show, people came to me and I am forever grateful for the support they gave me. One guy even travelled 2 hours to get there!!! I don't think i will ever forget that day, the feeling was unreal:')
thorns of the future: if you could turn back time and change something in your songs, what would you change?
villaz: There is definitely one song that does not resonate with me that much, i have to admit i don't like it. I won't say which one tho hahah I think it's because I did it for others, not for me; it didn't come from my heart. That's the thing I would change and I am changing actively right now - I only put out things I like.
thorns of the future: what is the best thing that's happened to you in your career?
villaz: Singling something would be unfair as so many amazing things had happened along the way. Although I have to say, that I still somehow cannot comprehend the fact that I have actual fans...... !!!!!!!
thorns of the future: how do you pick the covers to your singles & other releases?
villaz: I have synesthesia so it's really easy - the moment I start creating, visuals come to my mind and then I put them together.
thorns of the future: recommend a few artists that you believe should be way more popular.
villaz: MY BEST FRIEND IRYS - SHE DESERVES THE WORLD!!!! other than that I think that some Polish artists deserve international career - just look at Mery Spolsky's "Blond Włosy" ?!?!?! wtf?!?!?!?! this is too good!!!!!!!!!!! one of my fav songs all time for sure!!!
thorns of the future: what's the riskiest thing you've ever done?
villaz: I chose music as my career:')
thorns of the future: what is "your car" about?
villaz: One of the best period of my life. I felt so free, just.... I don't think words could ever describe it. I miss this feeling a lot. I created a piece of art that's euphoric but also nostalgic - to really bring that feeling back.
thorns of the future: what's your favorite song that you've made?
villaz: ITS NOT RELEASED YET SO GET READY!!!!!!!!!!
thorns of the future: if you could ask your younger self about her favorite song, what would she answer?
villaz: Younger? Like 12 - definitely something by guns n' roses - I was obsessed... But younger - like 16 - ilomilo. and that didn't change i think..
thorns of the future: who inspired you to make music?
villaz: My brain lol. I always kinda knew i'm gonna make music. But I love Finneas productions - i think they are what inspires me nowadays.
thorns of the future: what are your plans for the future?
villaz: I hope it won't sound cliche - but I just want to make music and make people happy with it. I want to play more festivals, shows, whatever, just live music. I love it and I think that is the best part of being a musician.
thorns of the future: if you could learn to play ane instrument, what would it be?
villaz: Probably violin, but I can play some basics!!! I borrowed my friend's violin and although I never played it before - I leamed some stuff in like 2 weeks and now the end of 3am" is not a MIDI -I played the violin myself:) (I have to admit, there was lot of tuning. but lol still PLAYED IT!)

villaz: GET READY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i love you the most
