Vinalhaven Maine
Just got back from our trip to Maine. I took my two little boys, M & L ages 6 & 2, without my husband but with my mom & stepdad.
A few things we noticed.
It’s beautiful there in a very start, harsh kind of way. Melancholy & dramatic
Going anywhere with two little kids by myself for anything longer then 2 days, sucks.
The island is a food desert. There aren’t any good staples that are always open, easily accessible, regularly priced and fresh. Nothing.
The only way to stay is to rent a reasonably priced house & hope like hell its baby friendly. Most aren’t.
Traveling with ones parents as an adult, also sucks. They’re high maintenance.
Boat trips, the quarry, a hike or two, a quick exploratory drive, beach combing, kayaking and reading are THE things to do. They are also all free. Mostly.
Spending money isn’t difficult if you know where to look. There are two stores, a cheese shop & wine store. That’s pretty easy.
Driving up is the only way to go. You need a car. With 4wheel drive.
Bring a fancy fancy camera. You’ll want it. Also bring a waterproof one with a wristlet.
Get to know a local!
Don’t go onto private property
You will NOT get service. You may text, but no calls, no emails, no social media.
OUTSIDE. Be outside, do outside, live outside. It’s all there is anyways.
Pack for every type of weather. It’ll all happen throughout the course of a day.
I love my stepsister. She’s the next best thing to my brother. A great buffer plus a good drinking partner
We had a good time but, we’re all very glad to be home.

when I was visiting Vinalhaven, Maine last month, a friend on the island's mother pulled an amazing collection of vintage fabric out of her closet and told me to have my pick. I painted this small portrait of her as a child from 1950 as a thank you for all the beautiful fabrics that will go into future paintings :) Thanks Lois! #seanmahan #seanmahanart #vintagefabric #fabric #floral #vinalhaven (at Neptune Beach, Florida)
My favorite place to be ❤
