This is probably a few months after Brelyna meets Vindryl the first time. In that time, they’ve been meeting secretly in between his clan’s cave and Winterhold to learn more effective communication. And they get to be really good friends in this time!

Unfortunately, Vindryl’s clan gets suspicious of him leaving the cavern so frequently. And eventually it comes to the elder’s attention that he’s meeting with a surfacer. In the interest of the continued security of the clan, he gets banished.

Brelyna finds him curled up in their meeting spot, in a clear state of distress. He tells her what happened, and she immediately decides “well, guess I’m sneaking you into the college. We’ll find a place for you to live.”

Yadda yadda yadda Urag spots them since they’re not so great at being sneaky, and *gestures*

It’s safe to say that the Archmage is fine with it after hearing out the situation. Urag, for his part, quickly takes a liking to the intelligent and curious Vindryl, and takes it upon himself to give him more refined language lessons. And before long, Vindryl ends up being rather eloquent~

They also end up developing some kind of magical braille, so blind folks have access to the knowledge in the library too. Because YES.

Figuring some character things out and getting some things down- infodump after the cut~

OKAY. Just jotting things down so I don’t forget- this will probably ramble but OH WELL.

Vindryl was born and raised with his clan in an old dwemer ruin south of Winterhold, known to surfacers simply as The Sightless Pit. The location is pretty far removed from where most folks travel, so they don’t interact with surfacers too often, and tend to prefer to just avoid them all together if at all possible.

He is relatively young by Falmer standards, around his mid-30′s or so, and has some SERIOUS cabin fever. He often sneaks out of the cave to feel the wind and sun and explore a little bit in the snow. He thinks he’s careful enough, that he won’t be seen by any odd wandering surface dwellers, so he never thinks much of the elder’s warnings that he should stay in with the rest of the clan where it’s safe. His ears are better than anyone else’s in the cavern, and he could hear if anyone were to approach him, what did HE have to worry about? 

Unfortunately for him, exceptional hearing doesn’t do much to warn one of bear traps laid out in the snow. Even MORE unfortunate, his cry of pain when the trap snapped his leg alerted a frost troll to his presence.

As luck would have it though, a young Dunmer mage named Brelyna Maryon had been sent out from the college in Winterhold to check the very trap that Vindryl’s leg was caught in. The mages had set a few such traps out, in an effort to catch trolls, bears, or sabrecats in an effort to restock some of their alchemical supplies. And Brelyna had drawn the short straw when it came to her duties today, and was saddled with the errand of checking the traps.

She heard struggling coming from area she was supposed to check, readied her spells in case she needed to defend herself, rounded the corner and– was very surprised to see a very UNtrapped troll, and a very trapped, very injured Falmer, looking absolutely desperate and hopeless. 

One ill-advised, split second decision later, and she had put herself between the injured cave-dweller and the large hairy beast- blasting a gout of fire in the large creature’s face. A few more well placed fireballs, and the beast was down. She turned her attention to the very bewildered and quietly wimpering Falmer, still caught in the trap, not quite sure what to do.

After a moment, she sighed, and gathered her courage to approach, speaking quiet, comforting words in an attempt to calm the trapped Mer. He tensed when she approached, but stayed still enough to let her free his leg. When he felt the broken bone knit back together and the warm, pleasant tingle of a healing spell spread through his leg, he sat in quiet wonder. …and when his savior made to leave and be on her way…

Well no, that wouldn’t do. He was much too curious about this strange surface dweller who had saved him now. He wanted to get to know such a person better, maybe he had even found a friend outside of the safety of his clan’s cavern? He wanted that to be the case, there was so much more to the world, and he wanted to learn. So he put on what he hoped was his friendliest face, and tried talking to her.

Brelyna, for her part, had fully braced herself for an attack once the young Falmer was free, and had not expected a sharp, toothy grin- OR for him to try communicating with her. She actually caught a few of his words, not understanding them, but recognizing them as old Falmeri, which she had heard Urag gro-Shub, the college librarian, grumbling about as he had been translating some ancient Falmer text that had been brought in.

This sudden realization gave her an idea, and before long, she was leading the curious Vindryl back to the college- in the hopes that they’d be able to work out a means of communication. OOF. OKAY. THAT’S ALL I GOT FOR NOW. MORE LATER AS I DOODLE MORE AND SKETCH STUFF OUT.
