This scooter-share company has just released a thousand mopeds in Brooklyn. Revel @we_are_revelers scooters are rentable by the minute via the app and can be parked in any legal city parking space. The scooters can be returned only in Brooklyn and Queens (see second image for the specific zone) but will soon expand. Brooklyn Eagle summarized how it works: The mopeds’ home area stretches from Industry City in Brooklyn to Astoria in Queens. This includes Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, part of Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Downtown and DUMBO, among other neighborhoods. They will be appearing here within the next few days. Two DOT-certified helmets and insurance are provided with each moped, and there’s a foot rest if you want to have a second rider. When the ride is over, you just park it in a spot that’s legal for the next 24 hours (within the home area), and walk away. The machines don’t operate from midnight to 5 a.m. The cost is $1 to unlock the vehicle, then 25 cents a minute to ride. You can pause your ride for 10 cents a minute. (There’s a $19 fee when you sign up to pay for a license check.) #MapMondays! The Temporary Parallel Bypass Method for the Brooklyn Queens Expressway and Promenade as proposed by the Brooklyn Heights Association in response to the Department of Transportation's two options as presented to residents for rebuilding the crumbling expressway. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Both DOT options were awful; traditional lane-by-lane closures causing traffic on local streets, or the "innovative method" of building a temporary six-lane highway on the promenade (the walkway that runs along the top of the BQE in Brooklyn Heights) while the structure underneath is rebuilt. The latter would take less time, cost less and allow for everything to be rebuilt with better access, landscaping, and traffic calming. Either way, the promenade will have to be closed at some point and rebuilt since it is supported by the expressway. The DOT has yet to determine if the BHA proposal, which would require at least 30% of the traditional lane closures and related traffic, is even feasible. Locals agree that temporarily closing the iconic promenade would be devastating but worry about lane closures diverting trucks through local streets. A tunnel or closing the highway altogether were already analyzed and determined to not be feasible. Either way, it is a bad situation.
