Building communities: a new way to engage with wine
Unlike most beverages, wine is about community. Grape growers, winemakers, cellar hands, pruners, cellar door managers; they live in communities, share their stories, experiences and of course, their wines.
It is this sense of community that traditional wine retailers don’t embody. Vinology is a new wine shop that plans on disrupting the traditional wine retail model by building on this wine community.
The new business does not make its revenue through the sale of wine, but rather through it’s membership. Why would wine lovers join this new community? “Because of their love of wine and the cellar door experience. We are offering our members new cellar door experiences, with video interviews and tastings of smaller, independent winemakers.”
“Our members attract the benefits of each of these winery’s wine clubs, with invitations to winemaker dinners, club discounts and access to unique wines. They are able to mix their regular dozens with wines from across each of the wineries.”
“The wineries have been extremely supportive,” explained Nicola. “They love the website as its very different to anything else out there and their wines are beautifully represented. The idea of building on their existing clubs and communities is very appealing. These are wineries that are not represented in the chains. They are winemakers that share my love of stunning wines, wine labels and cellar doors.”
The initial winemakers that are represented through Vinology include Swinging Bridge from Orange / Canowindra, Blind Corner from Margaret River and Purple Hands from Barossa. “We are working with a number of winegrowers from these regions as well as from Shoalhaven, Mornington Peninsula, Hunter Valley and the Southern Highlands of NSW.”
“We are aiming to work with around 15 winemakers as we build the membership. Depending upon the membership level, customers can choose to receive just a couple of bottles of wine per month. In the near future we will be adding wine inspired artwork and home and kitchen wares.”
Vinology has been very well received since its inception, offering a free case of wine for new members showcasing the quality wines that members can expect.
Further information on this new wine community can be found at www.vinology.com.au as well as their well-supported Facebook page (Facebook.com/vinologist) and blog (vinology.org).
