The small Rabone combination square all cleaned up. I was debating whether to repaint it or leave as it is. Remember this restoration project? This vintage Sargent 1414 Jack plane sat ignored for several decades until I got ahold of it. It definitely needed some TLC and more than a touch of tuning up. 

After a couple weeks worth of work, it has now joined my daily bench tools. It holds a perfect track both with and across the grain. It’s a workhorse, and is made to be used. 

There is history in these older examples of a person’s choice of tools for their given craft. I can only imagine the projects this Jack was a part of creating.

Sargent 1414 'HERCULES' Jack Plane Restoration Update: I managed to get the body cleaned, polished,and back in shape. The sole needed a good bit of truing up, and both the toe and heel show heavy wear. Much of this may be due to the fact this is a low-end market line, so the machining during manufacture was most likely a bit rough. But, it's NOT a Bailey (Bite me, Tool Snobs), so I have no gripes. It's a user, not something to gather dust on a display shelf.

The Frog, Cap Iron, and Cutting Iron need some serious attention, so since I'm avoiding the human race at the moment, I may as well get started.

My next restoration project: Sargent model 1414 'HERCULES' Jack plane, manufactured from 1927 to 1949. Although at the time it was marketed as a low to mid-range 'homeowner' model, the quality is on par, if not above, many top line models of today. This lovely example is only suffering from a few decades of neglect, and should be a fine addition to my daily bench tools. I'll keep ya posted. 😎

The latest acquisition to my everyday tool selection, this 1960′s vintage Stanley ‘Two-Tone’ plane. It suffered from a few decades of neglect, but with a good deal of polishing and tuning, it now has a permanent home on my bench.

As far as the history of this jewel, I found out that the Stanley ‘Two-Tone’ line was a series that ran concurrent with other types from the ‘50′s to 60’s and possibly as late as the 1970′s. They were somewhat similar to the standard Stanley planes, but with cheaper features and marketed in department stores and other non-traditional retailers.

I don’t know a much at all about this line of Stanley planes, and there are other Stanley tools manufactured with the ‘Two-Tone’ name, such as bit braces, chisels and screwdrivers.  I’ve noticed that there is no logo cast into the lever cap, but it has ‘TWO-TONE by Stanley’ stamped on the cutter.
