on a more cheerful note. i was surprised to see that some of the backdrops in the 1950s live-action shows are very stylistically similar to the ones that show up in the cartoons from the same era. the nat king cole show uses the same kind of messy, texture-y abstract geometrics here, and the colgate comedy hour has the skewed, off-kilter perspective and the combination of bold linework and lineless representations.
I mentioned it in my last VS post but playing this game seriously does hit different in multiplayer. It's no longer just "I need to find food so I can survive the winter and do stuff" it's now "I must find food for my friends. My friends who I care about very much and who I'd like to see enjoy this game with me. Their sad hungry harmonica noises distress me greatly. I cannot send you a real homemade cake when you're sad bc we have an ocean between us but I can make sure the next time you log onto the voxel survival game there is soup and bread in the cellar that will sustain you on your next adventure into the wilderness."

waugh. okay. so it looks like finding 1950s talk show episodes is not just a Look It Up On Youtube research project but an Actual For Real Research Project involving trawling through and ordering from archives. I guess that makes sense given how little 50s tv was preserved and the logistics of digitizing and online-hosting that kind of collection but maybe I'm going to hold off on that one for now.
ohh i should absolutely be cribbing background styles from these 50s cartoons. there are a lot of effort-saving tricks from low-budget productions that could be adapted to my low-energy production

i spend an awful lot of time these days going "huh, i don't really know anything about 50s cartoons, i should probably look that up" and then going "...wait i do know these. i watched them all the time as a kid"
