I have the feeling it's going to be an #amp-heavy kind of day here on the DeeBeeUs™ channel because 1) I freaking love vintage #amps so much and 2) I saw a lot of fun ones on the weekend! . Case in point: here is a gut shot of the pristine 1937 #Gibson #EH150 spotted on the weekend at @thetwelfthfret in Toronto, Canada. Check out how clean it is. I mean this amp is 83 years old ffs! I know a few 83 year olds and believe you me they are not this clean! Check out those original tubes. I guess they didn't like glass back then...seven point six two millimeter, full metal jacket! But seriously, does anybody know why old tubes are metal instead of glass? Is it just a metal cover and there is glass inside? Does metal shed heat better? Is it to protect the glass inside from breaking? So many questions! . It’s #Tubesday again! These three came out of the ‘46 #Fender #Princeton. 5Y3 rectifier, 6SF5(?) preamp and 6V6 power. And dig those brand names: National Union, Rapsco, Raytheon. They sound like they come straight out of the golden age of radio. According to @marshalllespaulfan they all test fine though! Speaking of testing...there’s news on the ‘46 Princeton Project Resurrection front: head over to @marshalllespaulfan’s feed and see his solution to get around the malfunctioning fieldcoil speaker. It’s ingenious and it means I’ll get to play this little monster through some pretty big speakers until we can find someone to repair the field coil. I am so excited by this prospect. As you know I’m a big fan of low wattage tube amps...but my problem with them is that they are usually built into tiny little cabinets with tiny little speakers. And so they sound...well...tiny! Every time I have heard a low powered amp through a larger cabinet it has always sounded fantastic...so I’m excited to get this amp hooked up to a 2 x 12 or 4 x 10! As I was saying to @marshalllespaulfan when I took this, I know almost no one is going to “like” this picture of his absolutely incredible 1940s #Stark model 9-66 “Dynamic Mutual Conductance Tube Tester”. I mean it isn’t a 1959 #LesPaul or a 1956 #Stratocaster, or even a poor quality #Jazzmaster copy! But I know there is a very special small group of amp-oholics and #tube junkies out there that will get a real charge (no #amp pun intended) out of this spectacular piece of vintage #electronic testing gear. Just got my 1962 #Fender #Tremolux back from @marshalllespaulfan who fixed an issue with the tremolo circuit (it was noisily making a thumping sound when set to full intensity) and generally improved the sound (on an already great sounding #amp) by substituting some #vintage #tubes for my modern ones in the first preamp stage and the power stage. Until now I never thought tubes made THAT big a difference...but they do. @marshalllespaulfan patiently allowed me to a/b several different tubes, modern and vintage, and there was a noticeable difference, with the specific tubes he selected delivering a much more articulate and clear tone with tight lows and clear, but not tinny or grating, highs. My gob, as the say, has been well and truly smacked!
