4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?

william t. vollmann, disturbingly enough! I'm afraid I have to go read more of his books now by how the lucky star gutted & destroyed me. also very much enjoyed sayaka murata, poppy z. brite (eek!), and ovid.

13. What were your least favorite books of the year?

this was a major reread year unfortunately. i think/guess (?) i was prioritizing other things than reading, such as boxing, writing, doing a decent job at work, and getting my back blown out. so nothing as amusingly egregiously bad as last year when i cast a wider net. but let's bang out a few haterations bullet-point style, most of which i have already blogged about but nevertheless:

an arrangement of skin: essays by anna journey (boo hiss barf crown of shame worst book of the year)

playlist: what kind of music/songs help you write? do you have a writing playlist?

if i need noise i’m going straight to rainymood.com and smashing that play button. i can’t have lyrics or beats or anything else i’m gonna start subconsciously transcribing what i’m hearing.

faulkner: what tropes do you LOVE writing? which ones are your guilty pleasure?

HA. since taking a side move into huge meaty men - and let me take a moment to advertise that i have been writing in the past year, throwing my lot all-in on a psychic mutant with a cool metal arm and a big titty murderboy who have met maybe... three times? four times? in 30 years of comics - i’ve had a lot more freedom to go hog wild on all the kind of self-indulgent tropey shit that never fit fallout that well. i’m bordering close to 100k words of repressed catholicism vs horny telepathy and i’m l-o-v-i-n-g it.

this fic is a particularly funny mock wank report for a fandom au in which big name artist calliope and big name ficwriter rose get into good old wankety fisticuffs over fandom exchanges for complacency of the learned. naturally the extended cast can’t keep their noses out of the conflict, and even more naturally this may be the beginning of a beautiful blackrom.

i still laugh at this despite that it’s been several years since it was posted ok it’s very good

naturally this fic may be funnier if you’re Fandom Old (tm) enough to have observed fandom wank culture back on ye olde livejournal and/or dreamwidth, but it will still be amusing even if you missed that era.

hmm favorite fictional character... my mental slot machine is whirring between half a dozen that instantly leapt to mind but somehow i feel weirdly shy and don't want anyone to hunt down my ao3 based on any of them LOL because i apparently have a habit of picking a neglected character that everyone else in the fandom ignores, or worse, flattens, and latching onto their fraught inner worlds of which i am the only true visionary... in fact i just went back and privated another post where someone was asking about a story of mine because it was too easy to hunt the story down based on it haha. #healthyboundaries #yup

OKAY THATS NOT WHAT YOU ASKED a favorite character. as this is at the top of my mind right now randomly i really love marie from breaking bad. she really tickles me as this amazing combination of staunch values, to the point of shitty stridency and hypocrisy, and complete bullshit. so unpleasant and offputting in a very realistic and familiar way yet whenever she's on the screen you are saying yayyy yippeeee because you know any scene with her is going to rule. such a well-formed character and so well-written/living/breathing in the relatively little screen space she gets. idk what level "the most complex a female character can get before twitter starts getting scared" is but it's WAY below marie. horrid just horrid. we love her
