Hello, love!!!

1. First LP you ever bought?

Dearest lord, I'm not sure. I want to say it was the Hello Dolly! OBC recording and Baker Street OBC recording (which I recently ditched) 😂 I'm a theatre kid, what can I say? I was out at a resale shop with my dad in San Francisco and I saw the Baker Street one (former Superwholock swine over here) and had to have it. And Hello Dolly! was there too and I've always loved Carol Channing.

18. How many records (LP’s and singles) do you have in your collection?

Just recounted - 52 😅

My liddle vintage record rack from my parents' basement with my terrible Crosley Cruiser (bless her heart, she served me well through college, but it's time for an upgrade). The right fourth of records are my roommate's. Featuring Miss Phoebe.

32. Do you own any color vinyl? I got the green splatter version of the All Things Must Pass 50th Anniversary reissue back in August. I haven't yet had a chance to play it and see if it looks really cool when it spins, but I expect that it will.

33. Do you prefer buying records online or in shops? Oh definitely in shops if I can. There have been times where I thought I would never ever find something and so I ordered it online (e.g., Small Faces Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake), and it's great to get them in the mail but absolutely nothing beats the feeling of finding it in person, especially one you've been dying to own!! 😍 Patience and persistence are key. Also, going to shops in every town I visit 😂

14. Do you have any rarities/limited edition records? If so, how many? Well kind of...the super fancy deluxe whatever remasters of The Beatles' White Album and CSNY's Deja Vu are both numbered limited editions, so I guess that counts, even though they're not the original releases!

11. Is there an “odd man out” record in your collection (it doesn’t fit in with the styles/genres of the rest of your collection)? If so, what is it? Already answered here but I'll pick another really random one: Back to the Roots, credited to "John Mayall & Some Memorable Men." It's a double album and I got it for $5, figuring worst case scenario I don't like it and I'm out the price of a fancy coffee. Turned out to be really cool, bluesy, good for a certain mood.

5. Which artist’s records do you own the most of?

I don’t understand how this isn’t Pink Floyd but it’s Foreigner, with five albums

Actually I do understand how it’s because PF albums are STUPID EXPENSIVE

10. What inspired you to start collecting vinyl?

Spite

No like really, my dad has a huge vinyl collection that he won’t let anyone touch or play so I had to start collecting my own, I got a record player for Christmas like 2 or 3 years ago and took off from there 😂

I bought Desert Moons by Dennis DeYoung and Girls with Guns by Tommy Shaw at the same time, and those were my first records.

19. When did you first buy your own player?

Hmm, I've had a turntable for a long time, bc I got one as a present for Christmas when I was about 8. I've also taken one from my dad's friend that he was getting rid of. It was a really nice Bang & Olufsen, but the replacement needles were expensive and difficult to find so I didn't use it for very long. Finally, I bought my own a few years ago, it's a simple automatic Audio-Technica. I'm not very picky about stereo equipment

29. What’s one mistake you’ve made as a collector?

Before I started using discogs, I bought a few duplicates 😆 I bought the same Thunderclap Newman record twice bc they have different covers 😕 Yes, I should have known that they basically have just one album

30. Record(s) that you want to buy next?

I don't have anything specific in mind, but I'm always looking to add more Italian music to my library. I don't own any Musica Nova albums, and there's still a few by PFM that I need. I'm not really in any hurry though

31. What’s the best decision you’ve ever made as a collector?

to stop collecting novelty records 😆 I really need to go through them and sell

19. Have you ever inherited any records from your family?

From my dad I have LZ II, III, and HotH, as well as The Rolling Stones Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass). I treasure them and perhaps the next time I go home, I'll go through the WHOLE collection he keeps in the basement. Bet there are some very cool gems.

13. Record you hardly play?

Poor Dave Mason...bought his record exclusively for 'Let It Go, Let It Flow' and I just...never played it. Similar with Nick Gilder: bought it for 'Hot Child in the City' and just...................I need to get more into singles is what this is a lesson in.

Fun fact: my dad worked at Chrysalis in the late 70s/80s so has some stories of some musicians from that time. Apparently Nick Gilder was an ass 🤷‍♀️

20. Have you ever literally broken a record?

I was hoping someone would ask me this! The answer is YES, I had to do a scene from Noel Coward's Private Lives in my scene study class which includes the character smashing a record over someone's head (part of the reason I chose the scene in the first place). So I had to pre-break the record so that it was in a few pieces that I could continuously put back together for rehearsing and would tape it back together each time. I forget which record it was...a cheapy from the bargain bin no doubt.

10. Last record you bought?

You caught me the day after a teensy haul!

Melissa by Melissa Manchester - her song 'Midnight Blue' got me through a particularly tough time in college and I think she's a very talented vocalist overall (I would say most well known for her song 'Don't Cry Out Loud' - corny and brilliant).

Phoebe Snow by Phoebe Snow - I've loved her song 'Poetry Man' for a long time and remember reading about an account of a Zeppelin concert where her music was part of the preshow milling and seething which made me giddy. Also, I think this album cover is in the running for most beautiful of all time.

Blueprint by Rory Gallagher - 🥰🥰🥰 MR. GALLAGHER SIR. 'Daughter of the Everglades' just hit that little spot in my heart. 'Race the Breeze' also makes me feral. I love songs about trains apparently (see 'Southbound Saurez').

23. Which record in your collection is the oldest?

Memories Ad-Lib by Joe Williams and Count Basie (1958)...which I very much under listen to. Clearly in for a replay 🥰

Scream For Help by John Paul Jones - No surprise here. Came across the Etsy listing in the middle of the night via Pinterest back in...January. The fact I have it makes my heart sing. Been saving up to get a copy of The Sporting Life as a mint copy of that goes for $300+ but I NEED.

Rory Gallagher by Rory Gallagher (50th Anniversary Edition) - This is the first record I bought, first remastered collection, because I genuinely love an artist and desired it for my collection. I had purchased the LZ III 50th bundle with the 45 included but SOMEONE (looking at you Jimble McGimble) had to CANCEL IT. But Mr. Gallagher just makes my heart sing!

Eli and the Thirteenth Confession by Laura Nyro - No one deserves their praises sung more than Laura Nyro (yes, even John Paul Jones). She is so criminally underrated and has written some of the most formative songs of the late 60s/70s that, half the time, you don't even know it was her because SO many people cover her songs. This was her first album where she had creative control.

25 Most Beloved Melodies - I got this thing for 49 cents and it plays beautifully and just is a perfect record to put on to have something on in the background no matter the circumstance.

Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin - Okay, this is kind of a cheat, because I really WANT to say all the LZ albums my dad gave me (II, III, and HotH). I just put Houses because it's my favorite Zep albums. I credit Zeppelin with truly giving my dad and I a clean slate in our relationship. We gab about music all the time now and I'm so grateful for it.

7. When did you first start collecting?

Vinyls were just starting to have their return to the mainstream right around the time I started college, so I asked for my little red Crosley and just built my collection with cheap albums from Reckless Records here in Chicago. I've only started FORMIDABLY collecting since my 25th birthday in 2020 when my roommate gifted me a copy of Led Zeppelin I. Now I pay more attention to the quality and curation of my collection.

23. Which record in your collection is the oldest?

Answered here, now with an update! I'm currently listening to it and WOW this thing is killer!!!! Great quality. Forgot how beautiful Joe Williams' voice is.
