Yep.. Violator Union is coming.............
Single issues I've picked up at NYCC so far
Afroella
Exactly as it sounds on the tin: A loving tribute to 70’s Blaxploitation-style flicks, set in space. Bright coloring, gorgeous art style and laugh-out-loud puns (maybe I was a little punch drunk from walking the floor so long, but Afroella’s “sasso” made me ugly laugh) Spoke with the writer, Gemma Bedeau for a bit, she was so very charming and ugh, just, look, Tumblr, WE TOTALLY NEED TO MAKE SASSOS A THING
City of Walls
Takes place in a futuristic city that’s so big its buildings form de facto walls that few (if any) people have ever passed through. What the rich don’t rule, the gangs do. Three kids from the streets decide they’re going to build a plane and fly away.
1001
A (very loose) retelling of One Thousand and One Nights, written, drawn and colored by Sanya Anwar. Jaw-droppingly gorgeous art, a really cool premise (Scherazade is one of my favorite heroines evar), and how often do you see a comic set in the Middle East? I cannot WAIT to read this, I might even crack it open tonight.
Violator Union
Four terrible people start off awful, become friends, and learn how to become better people. Oh yeah, and they have super powers. C’mon, that’s like flutie catnip right there. Also, the art style is unlike anything else I saw on the floor – it sort of reminds me of the Gorillaz music videos.
Plume
Aside from 1001, this might be the story I’m most looking forward to reading. From what I can gather, it’s a western in which a no-nonsense, kick-ass cowgirl-type is trying to get revenge on a bunch of bad guys for REASONS. She has a sassy Fenris-alike companion in a tailcoat, because why not? Guys, the art is so gorgeous and the writing so crisp that I didn’t want to read too much on the floor lest I get spoiled ugh can’t wait. Really bummed the author/artist k. lynn smith wasn’t at the con to get this signed.
Accelerators
Three time-travelers can only go forward in time. That’s all I know, but it’s enough for me to pick up the first issue. Well, that and the cover, on which appears to be a gladiatorial ring in which a caveman is beating up a 1700s’ era nobleman, because why not?
Kid Havoc
Okay, so technically Mr. Flutie picked this one up for me. But basically it's a Beyond Good and Evil style plot with a Sin City-esque art style, which, yes please. Also the creators are launching their own fashion line, which is such a cool crossover concept that I really hope it takes off.
I'll report back on how they all shape up :)
VIOLATOR UNION: THE COMIC on kickstarter
“What if the power to destroy or change the world was given to irrational criminals?”
The Cowan Nation is oppressed under a dictatorship. Drug-users called “Tainters” litter the world with problems, and bounty hunters are hired to enforce the law.
The land has been divided into districts, which are run by governors who claim the districts like mafia lords.
Violator Union follows the group of four recklessly horrible criminals and their giant dog. The story focuses on the group’s thief, Leara, and the murderer, T.A., who possess mysterious powers that make them the prime target of hunters, rebels, and the government.
They all set out on a journey together to find a rumored paradise as they rob, murder, kidnap, fight bounty hunters, and avoid being captured by the government.
If they don’t end up killing each other, they may just find a way to paradise.
STYLE
"The action scenes are filled with quirky side jokes and goofs. With the electric art style of Lazymills and conflictingly emotional toned situations, the lively pace of the story will not let you rest as there are surprises around each corner. With all of the depth in a character and funny moments making you feel safe, It's the sudden eruption of butt whoopings that wake you up.... The best part of waking up is "the whoopings of the butt". The fight scenes are cleverly unorthodox. The humor is dry and quirky. While the plot and character motives are dark and grey, there is always a beam of color reminding you that life is still in progress." ~Lazymills
GOAL
To make Violator Union come to life in the form of a comic book. (Both volume 1 and volume 2) We want to be able to order at least 200 books ready for this year, but if we can make it 1000 copies, VOLUME 3 and 4 of VU will be next for a debut. A stretch goal is to have volumes 1,2,3&4 made into one hardcover book. THAT WOULD ROCK!
WHERE DOES FUNDING GO?
I do need to stay alive and fed while i'm getting the book finished. Funding will cover the artists, Lazymills and her assistants, as they work on the comic as well as the preparations for the years comic conventions. It will cover the cost of printing, shipping, and polishing the books. It will cover the cost of ads, banners, convention booths, displays, website space; VU merchandise will also be covered to further build onto the VU world. T-shirts, buttons, posters, and funny shorts that will be posted on the ViolatorUnion Youtube channel for free viewing. the stretch goal is to do a full length animation.
Risks and challenges
Hi, this is Lazymills. Currently, I am the only artist able to work on both line art and writing for the comic but the goal is to have the pages in full color. For that, I've got one the best colorists I could ask for standing by. If the campaign fails, it will be tough to do it without him polishing it up all pretty like. On top of that, is the plans of taking the books to conventions for it's debut. It would be our goal to have the book completed in time for this, but also to have enough to have shops keep a number of for sale.
The biggest risk, however, is that I may need to divide my time between work and the pages. If that is ever the case, there will be a shift on to another artist who will work their magic as i direct. I don't plan on that happening, but worst case scenario...
If this VU Kickstarter campaign is successful, I will likely do another Kickstarter campaign for the animated pilot of VU.
so lets do this. LETS VIOLATE THIS JOINT?
SIGNAL BOOST!
my very very very very good friend, Shawna Mills, is slowly putting together work to start a kickstarter fundraiser for her project, Violator Union. This is the teaser trailer for it. And I'm honestly blown away by all of it. I'm just so proud of her and everything she's trying to get done here.
Just giving this thing another outlet to be seen by people...YOU'RE WELCOME!
