Violet Blush pt 2 (Adam's POV)
*Guess what today is?! That's right! I could hardly believe it myself. But it's finally here...*
"Where was I going then? I can't seem to remember. Either way, this is what I saw. I was driving--somewhere--and eventually, I stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, the whole lane started to go. At the street horizontal to me, one of the cars tried to beat the light or something and hit the side of the first car. I slammed on my brakes and watched as the first car in the lane spun in a circle and then flipped over. As soon as I could, I called 9-1-1 and got out of my car. When I looked through the wreckage and roadside debris, I saw my ex-girlfriend lying there." "That's all that happened?" The skinny doctor who was aiding Breanne asked me. "That's all that happened," I repeated. I looked down at her, lying there on the cot. She looked helpless to me. I felt the doctor watching me as I looked away, tears staining my cheeks. I kept visualizing the accident, over and over and over and....
We eventually arrived at the hospital. I followed the nurses and doctors, racing down the maze of corridors as they rushed Breanne to the ER.
-------- I wasn't allowed in the ER yet, so I decided to go for a walk to clear my head. Instead of leaving the hospital, I turned into the gift shop. I realized that I should probably buy her something, so maybe a 'Get Well Soon!' balloon or some flowers would do. I picked up a fake violet and a patterned vase and paid for it.
Eventually, I went to her room with the vase in hand, silent and sullen. Breanne was laying there--bruised and bandaged and sleeping. A man walked in. He had dark skin, brown eyes, and looked very fit for his aged face. I assumed he was the doctor who was going to help her. He turned to me. "I'm Doctor Jones, are you a friend of Breanne's?" "Her ex-boyfriend," I replied. He gave me a strange look, then continued. "Well, Breanne's head was the first thing that got hit in the accident, so that's where most of the damage is. Right now, she's in a coma, which could mean she might not wake up for a few days, or even months. "The good--and bad--news is that she might forget some things. We still don't know how much she'll remember so we'll have to figure that out when she wakes up." "Thanks, Doc." "If anything, call me Jones." "Got it, Jones."
----
The next day, I went to visit her again. I was more concerned than I should've been. My album that she helped me with is coming out as soon as I finished another song or two. I wanted her to hear all of the other tracks. I sat in the seat next her bed and sighed, placing another violet--this time, a real one--in the vase.
I decided I was going to buy a violet for every day that she was unconscious for. That way, when she finally wakes up, when she asks me how long she was out for, I could tell her to count the violets.
I know me and Breanne didn't end in the best way but...
-----(three days later)-----
I had brought my songbook with me to the hospital today. By then, there were five violets in the vase; four real and one fake.
A high-speed collision gave a new sense of sight to me
And now my vision can render the scene.
A blurry image of wreckage and roadside debris
Happiness returned to me through a grave emergency.
-----(three weeks later)-----
"Adam, you know you have to get ready for the tour," my tour-playing pianist told me. It was supposed to be Breanne, I thought as I looked at her sadly from the chair next to her bed. "I know," I said with a small sigh. There were 25 real and one fake violet in the vase.
I hung up the phone quickly. I didn't know what to do. I'd practically been camping out here, just waiting for her to wake up. I had a feeling she wasn't going to wake up for a while. I had to keep my life moving, as much as my world had stopped without her...
I stood up to leave. As Doctor Jones walked in, I said, "Jones, can I ask one favor of you?" "Yes?" "Every day that she's unconscious, buy a real violet and place in that vase," I said, pointing to it. "Will do."
"And if you don't, I will forever call you Doc," I said with a forced smile.
I left alone and sad for the 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' tour.
