This is a scary time for writers, as we see censorship explode into our lives. As a writer, I am a passionate believer of freedom of speech, writers do challenge readers as they present scenarios, be them fiction or fact, in hope of showing people humanity and the world. A good book should challenge the reader, it should open up the world to everyone, and be a vehicle for thought. When we start dictating what can and cannot be said, we directly censor the creative freedom of a writer to freely express the real world. The whole point of reading something controversial, is to decide we what we will or will not accept, which is sort of the point of writing villains. As a woke culture takes control, freedom becomes stifled, and it bothers me that we have started on a slippery slope, towards uneventful writing. I learned about racism, and its corrosive nature at school, reading To Kill a Mocking Bird, and even at age eleven, I could see how wrong it was to judge someone because of their skin colour, and yet that is now a banned book in schools today. We need to step back, and seriously think, suppressing voices is a dangerous direction for humanity. Strat a brand new adventure this Winter, with Robin John Morgan’s Heirs to the Kingdom, a captivating and thrilling Fantasy Adventure.

What do you do when a world pandemic hits? Well you write about it. Problem is, I did that back in 2006 when I started writing Heirs to the Kingdom. So, what have I been doing during this pandemic of 2020? I have been writing, actually I have been writing none stop, and hopefully by Christmas, I will have completed my fourth manuscript for this year, although one of those was HTTK book eight, so I have three new stories to tell. i tell every writer I meet, who is just starting out, write about life, your life, your friends’ life, the life you see and know about, and this year that is what I have done. This year has been liberating for me, I have been free to dream, remember, and write what I like, as I am no longer stuck, in the ridged routine of a series, and have written something very different from Kingdom. I am planning a new book for next year, a HTTK related book, and I am excited to show yet another side of it, and it will be fun to create it, so hang in there, and stay safe. Abigail’s Curio Life, is now available in digital and print formats.

This remarkable series about the life of Abigail and her friends is now complete, as the last book finally takes Abby into her later life as she asks herself, “did we make a difference?”

Whilst you are all waiting for the last Curio book, I am busy working on the second book of the 'Sword for the sky' series, and getting to know this character a lot better, as she faces her past, and heads into an uncertain future. I am currently on the last few chapters of the second book.

Creating Abby for the Cover. Using a photo generator, with a detailed description of Abigail, working side by side with my wife, we were able to create a real living photograph of Abigail that would become the blueprint for the oil painting on the cover. It took almost 100 attempts until I was satisfied with the image, at which point I handed it over to wife, to begin work using a photoshop program in creating the painting. This image had to be very different from the others, because if you look really closely at the first five book covers, you will see all of the pictures are signed ‘Harriot B.’

For this final book cover, I wanted to recreate the painting in Curio’s Summer, from the day Chole moved into the house, and Birch sees the painting of Abigail done by Chloe for the first time. In order to achieve this, the painting style had to be different, so once we had what was the photo quality image, we set about using filters and some added enhancements to the image to style the image, and make it look like it had been painted. Abby’s fringe lacked red streaks under her hair, so my wife over a day, added them in line by line, to create the layers in such a way that the viewer would see, if Abby flicked her head, the red under fringe would be revealed.

It took a while, and to begin, with, my wife created a first ‘Under Image’ (Attached) on which other layers could be added, and some final detailing. To most people, you will simply see a book cover, but for us, it took a huge amount of time and effort to get the image to perfectly fit what was my idea of Abby in my head, as I wrote the series. I cannot thank my wife enough for her dedication and commitment to myself and my work, as she has worked some very long hours on all of the images that adorn the covers of my book. Each and every one, to me is a masterpiece of her art skill, but I cannot deny, this cover has become my favourite Curio cover image.

The picture on the final cover, unlike all the others in the series is signed ‘Chloe P’ and so now as you read Curio’s Summer, you too will know exactly why Birch loved this picture so much, that she bought immediately from Chole. This base image was in a sense a starting point for the final image, but I cannot deny, I love it equally as much as the finished cover.

Today, I am going over the test print to ensure everything is perfect for the books release. I am delighted with this cover, I feel the cover image painting of Abby aged nineteen is perfect, and it really looks fantastic on the cover print. Not long now, once approved, printing will begin in time for the release date of November 10th.

Abigail’s Curio Life.

It is great news to be nearing the end of the process, which will deliver the final instalment of the Curio Chronicle’s. The last book, is in production as it is set for final format for print production and heading towards the test print stage, having suffered a few sets backs of health scares and a personal bereavement.

The book is set to be released in early November, which is a little later than I planned, but I am back on track, and looking forward to sharing this very special part of Abigail’s story. More details with the official book brief will be available soon.
