I find it easier to see in the two deleted scenes, but yes. There’s a certain amount of it that I just have to take on faith.
Which is a thing I have to do in real life a bunch -- so many instances in which I just do not see why so-n-so is so smitten on someone! -- but I’m used to having those points of attraction be much clearer in fiction.

(And, also, for real–her accent. The writers really messed up not giving her any kind of past in the British Isles when it was clear how inconsistent her American accent would be. Why the hell not?) WomanofMystery!Kalinda never worked for me, and I found it borderling racist and biphobic. I think it’s why I latched on to her relationship with Lana in the first half of this season–it’s the closest the writers have come to really exploring who Kalinda is as a person, getting to know her better–but it was dropped. (And, actually, the relationship with Bishop came close, because it arguably gave her a foil who was more dangerous, self-reliant, and all-knowing than she was–but that also went nowhere).
In sum: I was someone very happy about the A/K relationship when it existed, but when it ended, I wasn’t distraught–I was however desperate for another path toward insight into Kalinda as a real, 3-dimensional person, instead of a caricature. And my anger now stems from the fact that they never delivered.
(I have a pretty charitable attitude toward the JM-AP “feud” because there’s something about the absolute ban on filming together that is reminiscent to me of a restraining order; and if there’s a restraining order, or even a non-official version of one so as not to make it public, then it’s likely that whatever happened was rather serious, and I’d rather not speculate.)
The writers tried–we have to give them that. Blake, her horrible ex, whatever–they spent a lot of airtime trying to give us more Kalinda, but they kept misfiring. And that to me is the biggest mystery of TGW: why the writers–the Kings, whomever they hired–were totally incapable of realizing Kalinda as a real character over the course of 3 years. Bah.
Ah, yay! This has turned into a discussion of Kalinda the character! I think a lot of people, in and out of fandom, found it hard to connect to K after the A/K “breakup.” It’s a great point that Kalinda at some points almost seems to require supplementary fandom material. Her mysteriousness drives that sort of fandom creation, but I can easily see how it could be off-putting. My mom hates Kalinda for that reason-- she thinks Kalinda lacks all characterization because it’s not obvious (to her) that there’s anything other than the mystery. But beyond that, the writers have failed Kalinda in not developing her more. They did a solid job setting up her character’s traits and quirks, but never pushed them or explained them. Archie’s acting helps, but there are things about Kalinda that can only be told by dialogue or actions no matter how great Archie’s performance is.
The writers leaned too heavily on mysterious!Kalinda in the later seasons especially (in the earlier seasons it just felt like we were going to get to unravel the layers later on). What you said about Lana is absolutely correct. I had my problems with the way they brought Lana back into the show, but at least they seemed to be going somewhere with it, somewhere where they would have to either explore why Kalinda remains static or force her to become more dynamic. But no! Instead, it went nowhere and was never mentioned again, and that’s even worse than not including it in the first place!
I feel like the writers fundamentally don’t understand the character they created. You’re right that they’ve tried to give Kalinda her own plots but failed miserably. I’m not sure if it’s an issue of tone or an issue of just not knowing the character at all. Blake was an awful plot device as was Damian in s5 (Jenna was just starting to grow on me when they got rid of her). The Nick arc disappoints me so much because Kalinda as an abused woman makes perfect sense to me, but what the hell was the writing for that arc?! Why in the world did they think that tone was appropriate to use? The issue wasn’t that it’s a bad idea to reveal backstory or that “you don’t give James Bond a girlfriend” or whatever the writers said, it was that they tried to make what should’ve been a simple yet tragic backstory into something they literally compared to 50 Shades of Gray. They spent years in that rut and never figured out how to get out.

Fan Shipping: June 22 – 26, 2015
CALL: Fan “shipping” is a term that describes the act of rooting for relation(ships) in an ongoing story, particularly in television series. Often, shipping happens in opposition to the official diegesis of the series (as in fan fiction). For some fans the tension between their desires and the decisions of the writers room can be stressful. For others, wresting control from those that run the show can be liberating and community forming. Shippers, especially in the internet era, develop culture to document their devotion such as fan fiction, videos and art. These materials and shipping communities themselves are valuable windows into audience reception. Shippers reveal shared beliefs about issues of power, gender, race, and romance. Increasingly, producers are taking notice of these communities and addressing them in their writing. IMR is asking for proposals to discuss how and why we ship.
Among the topics that might be examined:
· Specific ships
· Ship Wars
· Fan fiction, fan art, etc.
· The ‘special’ lingo “shippers” use (OTP, Bro-TP, Canon, etc.)
· Ship Baiting
Proposals may be brief, but do be sure to describe the topic and key question(s) to be explored. Please submit your proposal by Monday, May 25. If interested, please contact In Media Res ([email protected]) with topic proposals or for more information about the theme. Be sure to include the name of the theme week you would like to be involved with in the subject line of the email.
Academics, journalists, critics, media professionals and fans are all welcome to submit proposals.
The actual piece will include either a 30-second to 3-minute clip, an image, or a slideshow that will be accompanied by a 300 to 350 word response to/contextualization of your clip, image, or slideshow. In addition to the your piece, you will be expected to engage the other pieces presented that week to encourage discussion and further flesh out the individual topic in relation to the week’s theme.

Last time we saw him, he was leaving the debate practice because it wasn't working = current!Alicia can't make it work with him.
I'm seeing a Finn/Jon dynamic (no not like that) of angel/devil on Alicia's shoulders right now.
I sense an arc of Alicia "choosing the dark side" so to speak, and Finn's maybe the Obi-Wan in this scenario? I haven't though this through. That could possibly not be what I mean.
I am not fond of Jon. Perhaps because ♥ ♥ ♥ Finn ♥ ♥ ♥, but also because I find Jon kind of one-noteish and his equivocation this ep was so not attractive to me.
Did Alicia visit Canning in the hospital to negotiate or to be a friend? I'm leaning towards friend, but she's so clearly on a precipice this ep. And by the end, she's choosing to... idek. Fall? Depends on how you view her choices. But definitely rejecting the titles of "saint" and "good girl". Again, thoughts are half-formed right now.
I love Marissa. And Eli. And I want more Kalinda, always.
Also, could they not find anyone who looked more Josh Charles-y? The hair threw me off completely (too long, too long! Not Will!).
Also, Julianna Marguilies is flippin' gorgeous and amazing.
