Professor Yaffle- Everyone Wants to Dream (Violette Records)

Liverpool songwriter Lee Rogers heads up Professor Yaffle. The band's been around since roughly 2017, new to me, but they've nailed the psychedelic folk sound. The band also includes John Edge, Michael Holcroft, Dan Brownrigg, Alan Williams, and Jon Humphreys. I can't even begin to share the numerous orchestra musicians from Liverpool (and elsewhere) on this album. It's written as a tribute to Liverpool, especially a section known as Everton Brow. "On Top of the World" sets the tone with full blown orchestration over highly detailed musicianship. Next up, the title track, "Everyone Wants to Dream," highlights trickles of wah wah guitar, thumping bass, subtle snare, soaring organ, and Lee's smooth vocals.

Track three, "A Whispering (Amid the River Reeds)," slows things down a bit as an acoustic lullaby. Prove me wrong that this song wouldn't soften any situtation with its gentle piano and strings. "Come Fly With Me" begins with blasting horns and slips into a jazzy number filled with echoing keys, a stellar rhythm section, and those blasting horns again. And don't miss the numerous solos on this one. I'm sure it's a great crowd pleaser when performed live. "Lost in a Dream (On Everton Brow)" is another beauty with piano and strings. Lost in a dream? You bet. You'll be carried away from the gentle mood this one brings. (Apparently the lyrics were written when Lee was only eighteen.) Track six, "The City Bells," starts off again as an acoustic, softer number, but gradually the rest of the band enters with a batch of instrumental details and solos you can't miss with this album's superb production. And let's not forget the moving lyrics, "Wash away our sins and troubled souls, reap what you sew. The city bells ring out from above. The city bells chime on for our love. The city bells from high in the clouds." "It All Came Tumbling Down" is another upbeat beauty that could pass for a fully orchestrated injected take on John Barry's "Midnight Cowboy Theme." Nothing wrong with that. The album closes with "Every Day of My Life." It's an all out jam that borders on prog rock with its choice of vintage instruments and lo-fi phone vocal effects, but then there are those amazing horns again! There you have it. Eight new gorgeous songs from Professor Yaffle this time on the ever eye-opening label Violette. Good luck finding a vinyl copy of this gem, it sold out weeks ago. ERIC EGGLESON
