I started my violin by preparing the ribs. I cut thin strips from the same piece of maple that I'll be using for the back plate. Off the bandsaw, the strips are around 3mm thick. The finished thickness of violin ribs is 1.2-1.4mm. I used a drum sander to thin the 3mm strips to 1.4 mm to allow some scraping and sanding. The ribs are now ready to bend and shape to the violin outline!
