looking for good stand-up comedy worthy of a witty court jester whose every joke is a social commentary?

go watch Vir Das. seriously, it's worth it.

Pros:

Patriot not nationalist

LGBTQ Ally

Funny

anti-purist

talks about emotional issues

has an Indian touch while making majority of jokes in english

translates Hindi jokes for non-hindi-speaking audience

doesn't focus solely on one aspect of society e.g. colonialism, racism

Not overly idealist but not overly practical

Cons:

if you're uncomfortable with sex jokes then it may get a bit iffy

generalises (but then most comedy comes from that so.)

may get a bit more emotionally heavy than other comedians

idk he swears? jic people get upset (though if you're upset about that how are you here)

A book on my tbr: I have 133 on my tbr 🫣. I have no clue anymore.

A book I've put down: the Kingdom of Copper - Daevabad trilogy. Loved the first book. Stopped because of finishing my studies (3 years ago, oops) and because I couldnt quite like the remaining characters. I thought oh I'll read fanfic, those are short one shot stories which won't distract me 👀 (oops again)

Just Finished Vir Das' Fool Volume on Netflix!

What a comedy special! ❤️❤️❤️ I realised that I genuinely laughed at a joke after ages. After spending so much time on stage and observing all the comedy not as just comedy but as craft, you become a bad audience for stand- up. Because you're never listening to the joke but trying to construct it alongside and looking at the writing and delivery and all other technicalities. I laughed so much after ages. I am happy that I did!
