I had been looking for this bird for a while. I knew about where they were, have heard them in the tall grass and seen lots of pics. The Virginia Rail had always eluded me. I was very happy to add this one to my life list of birds.

Virginia Rail
It was such a treat to add the Virginia Rail to my birding life list. My friend Corey and I both scored this one earlier this year.
My friend Corey and I spotted quite a few Virginia Rails on Sunday. This is as close as I have ever gotten to one. Right along the roadside at Farmington Bay.
Headed out today with my friend Corey to do a little bird watching. Hopefully going to add a few more to my life list.
Rallus limicola- Virginia Rail Last year I had my first near encounter with a Virginia rail, but because of its elusive nature we never actually saw it. We could only recognize it by its distinctive call. It was even more exciting when we finally found this one because it was in the exact same location. Virginia rails are a stout bird with a squat body, built perfectly for plowing through dense marsh vegetation. They also have incredibly powerful little legs. In fact, they have a leg-muscle to wing-muscle ratio that is unlike most other birds. When threatened, they use these powerful legs to outrun and outmaneuver their predators. These guys definitely did not skip leg day. .
